  • What Speed on Touring??

Is it a problem if one does continuous riding on High Speeds?? Specially when doing a long distance journey?? Its a general question for any 150 cc Bike.

Some time back, I did a 450 KM single day ride. I maintained a speed between 100-110 KMPH for some 60 KMs and 90-100 KMPH for some 120-140 KMs. No breaks in between.

This weekend we did 250 KM one way ride (overal 500 KM) in 2 days. 2 RTRs, my Fuzzy and a 3-4 year old unicorn. We all were doing constant 90-100 for atleast 150 KMs.

The general question was, is it safe for our engines?? Since yesterday my Fuzzy is smelling.

    Please suggest.

it shouldnt really be a problem...though try and take short breaks every 45mins or so to give the engine a break.....riding at high speeds will also demand more frequent and good quality engine oil changes....also its better to stick to semi-synthetic or fully synthetic oils for such rides....along with periodic services
You can take the ride away from me but you cannot take the rider out of my soul.........

Hmm..yeah wanted to check on Engine oil also. I heard synthetic or semi-synthetic is not good for new bikes. Both RTRs and Fuzzy are relatively new new (< 5 months old)

I use Yamlube for my ride and one of the RTR was using Castrol Power 1.

Also, do additive help?? and is it advisable to use them??

If you are riding at those speeds its not really too much of an issue, but then running the engine at almost 90% of its potential will stress out the parts and causes and overall reduction in engine life!

no need of any additives.....shift to semi synthetic or fully synthetic if your bikes have completed around 2500kms....very good for touring purpose...mineral oils get spoilt very quickly in high speed runs...personally i wouldnt really prefer riding my bike to almost 90% of its potential over such a ong duration of time without breaks......as praful sir said,it does decrease your engine life significantly

Hmm.. so what would be an ideal speed (assuming (super) good roads)...for a 150 cc bike for touring/long rides of approx 200-300 KM per day?

I would say 80km/hr. is a good cruising speed for a 150cc machine. Not much stress to the engine or the machine as a whole, and you get time to look at the vistas around you too.
                    :)

+1 to that....in fact 80kmph is good enough for most of the 150cc+ indian bikes in my opinion....

Even touring on my P-200, I keep the speed between 80 and 90 km/hr. That way, I feel relaxed, the machine is relaxed and everything feels just alright.

Well, the roads were awesome and as such not much traffic. That it did gave us time for looking around the vistas!!

Amazing roads with quite a scene around. Will take some time to post the travelogue.

80KMPH was what we were also thinking, but still thought to discuss on xBHP.
How about the Engine oil and stuff.

It's always advisable to get the engine oil changed after you complete a fairly long trip. That way the viscosity of the oil remains, as after a fairly high speed long run (as is the case with touring), the oil eventually becomes 'water'!
                            :)
