    Ruling Regarding usage of GoPro

    Ok so I got my Hero4 Silver and I got the mount fixed on my Helmet. Now I have gone through several videos on youtube by Indian Riders and some of them have been stopped by the COPS for the camera. Some said its fine and same said its illegal.

    I could not find any clear statement saying that Action cameras on Helmets are allowed. I merely know that theres no Law that prohibits its usage.

    So can I get some help with this issue, Thanx!

    Strangely, this falls under a grey area in India. If there is a prohibition at places like temples, forts, army cantt etc, do not use it. As simple as that!
    I have seen folk capture the innards of peoples' homes in rural areas in the name of creativity and that for sure makes them uncomfortable.

    A bit of common sense goes a long way! Keep the cam reserved for the road and adventures and out of sight in sensitive locations.

      None of us have heard about this rule either. Whether go-pro is legal in this country or not. As DS rightly pointed out, keep them out of sensitive areas like schools, temple, any thing related to government. Cops may think you scout these places and sell them to "somebody".

      IMO, If I had to use it, I would be using it on highways and ghat roads where there are very less chances of any sensitive items coming in the way. And strictly keep it out of city use. Some cops do take it in a proper manner and you can convince them that you are moto v-logger and you shoot videos for learning and teaching people.

      Some totally take it the opposite way. Its definitey like AREA 51. We know it exists, but no proofs for that.

        Yea those places I understand. But my intention is just to capture daily rides and hopefully traffic offenders. Now Ofc theres not much you can do with traffic offenders but I like to give it a try and see if I can provide info to the COPs about them. Seems like a bold move but no harm in trying.

        Unfortunately that is the sad truth

        I had this brilliant and stupid plan to go visit my Local Police station and talk to them about this and ask them for a permission of some sort. Would you think this would be wise of me to do so?

          As rightly pointed out, this is a grey area and therefore makes sense to be defensive whilst using an action camera. A while back, I was stopped by the cops on my way out of the city early morning. After asking me some random questions about my bike to which the cop had no interest in my answers he then asks "what's that?", the senior inspector pointing to the camera. In the end I ended up taking a short video of them all posing with my bike. This is the lighter side of bikers using an action camera, though I feel it is mainly curiosity which bites people. Nevertheless how does one reason with the odd chap one may bump into!

            There are two things here.

            One is the fact of being allowed to shoot videos in a public place.

            Secondly, the safety of the rider when he places a GoPro or any other action camera on his helmet. To what extent is the helmet and consequently the rider's safety compromised with the addition of that. Also the aerodynamics that get effected because of a protrusion on your helmet. If you mount the camera on the side of your helmet, then the additional weight will tire out the rider much earlier, it could also obstruct vision when turning to look back. What if you crash and the camera is the point of contact, then that camera might increase the chances of damage of the helmet shell and again compromise the safety of the rider.

            To sum up, use an action camera on your motorcycle. Leave your safety gear to do the job of keeping you safe only.
            Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

              No offense though, but what good do you think it is going to make. You aint going use your Go-Pro in your area..are you ? These cops wont be bothered to hear our plea in the first place, when they do, they make a mockery out of us. If not, he will ask all your details for what-so-ever reason he has in his mind.

              They wont be happy to give you a permission letter to use it either. Having said all of that, you still can give a shot. These are perspective of any cops in common man's mind. There can be good ones to . All you have to do is ..find them

                Sometimes, it is better to ask forgiveness than to ask for permission.



                Using a Go-Pro in public places is NOT illegal.

                Using it at private property can get you in trouble.

                The best way to get out of an issue with being told not to use a camera is to say, "I'm sorry. I'll stop right away."

                Turn the camera off and go on your way. Wait about 5 minutes and start using it again.

                This is my advice for public spaces ONLY. When on private property, respect the rules set by the owner or person in charge.

                Try a brace/mount that fixes onto the front of your jacket/chest. It's less obvious and you'll get noticed less.

                And, you get a better, symmetrical and more natural point of view anyway.

                  Thanks for that brilliant advice Xionite. Also as far tampering related to the helmet is concerned, I fixed the mount on the front of helmet below the Visor and I have tested it, it does not disturb the aerodynamics (considering the max speed I did was just 100kmh) and neither does it obstruct my view. But I will keep in mind the safety protocol.
                  Also the helmet that I am using is KRONOS manufactured as a Sub-branded entry level helmet by MT helmets. Aspida (spartargear) are the distributors for these helmets. REVIEW coming soon xD!

                  Totally right about that. But I believe its nice to get some form of official statement regarding this subject rather than just uncomfortably using the Camera in secret to capture your daily rides or stuff like that. Iam not aware if any motorcyclist as actually gone ahead and has given it a try...

                    I was stopped and asked to stop recording while I was roaming in Delhi... The cop said it was a high sensitive zone. Some Ex-PM's residence.

                          I found it somewhere in the blog.that's why you don't see so much vblogs for Bangalore ,rather you find a pot for Hyderabad etc where its legal
