  • Converting the labelled "AS 200" to the real deal!

    Hi Guys!

    I bought a pulsar AS200 in 2015, the first lot, in Chennai. (Gifted to my younger brother actually). Now both of us have spent considerable time and kms on the machine, and we feel that, even though it's labelled as an "Adventure Sport", off-road performance is just passable. We've been planning on converting it into a proper enduro, albeit with the same mill. A few mods we thought of are as follows;

    1. Conversion of alloy wheels to spoked rims.
    2. Handle bar raisers
    3. Looking for a quick throttle (planning on a jugaad on this aspect)
    4. Planning on modding the clutch assembly as well, to make shifts faster.
    5. suspension set up - Need to make the suspension really pliant like the motocross bikes (advice needed badly on this)
    6. Cosmetic mods like removing the rear mudguard, installing the NS' Licence plate and indicator holder and the tyre hugger, probably installing a mock beak in the front.

And there's no other place i'd rather go to than xBhp to get pointers and some good advice!

Please list your gyaans to educate a fool! TIA!

    Thread Moved and Approved

Moved it to GDB, because if you do pull it off, it will be extremely interesting.

    Glued to the thread!

Better stick to stock set of wheels and get some good tyres like Ceat Vertigos or Pirelli MT60

        2. Handle bar raisers

Can be easily done with some spacers

        3. Looking for a quick throttle (planning on a jugaad on this aspect)

You can buy an aftermarket unit or put a small spacer circlip.

        4. Planning on modding the clutch assembly as well, to make shifts faster.

Start with stiffer set of springs, o putting washers under the spring is a jugaad which might work to increase clutch spring tension and improve shifts.

        5. suspension set up - Need to make the suspension really pliant like the motocross bikes (advice needed badly on this).

This is the real tough nut to crack, you start with longer custom springs and lower weight fork oil for the forks. For the rear i suggest go with an impulse unit or something similar.

        6. Cosmetic mods like removing the rear mudguard, installing the NS' Licence plate and indicator holder and the tyre hugger, probably installing a mock beak in the front.

The rest I leave upto you, but these would make it quite competent off road. Also don't forget to get proper set of off road pegs, helps a lot while riding in standing position.

Noted! Could you elaborate on the suspension set up? I initially thought of ripping the entire setup from the impulse, but figured the front fork would not support the AS' riding dynamics.

Shifting to spoked rims, because we intend to thrash the bike off-road, and an alloy would get bent and out of shape. I do understand that punctures on spoked wheels are aPITA, but can live with it, rather than change the alloy everytime

The Unicorn's setup seems to be the most compatible, but that too falls below expectations for the rear suspension. Will look into mating the Impulse's entire rear swingarm and mono.

Well, first and foremost. They do not sell it as an enduro. Adventure Sport = tourer. Scaled down Triumph Tiger XR, for the want of a proper analogy to draw. Or the versys 650 or whatever.

1: The The versys and the tiger xr dont get spoke wheels. So it is not necessary for an adventure tourer to have spokes, unless you intend to do hardcore off roading. In that case, get an impulse and do a zma engine swap

2: I heard the bars are very slightly raised as compared to the NS200. Can be raised further, though. But the riding position is hardly what i would call focused. The rearsets need to be moved forward, though. But that is a lot of effort.

3: You can shorten the throttle body. But again, a adventure sport tourer's throttle is not meant to be snatchy. Its meant to be forgiving.

4: Again. Why? On a tourer?

            5: Loosen the rear monoshock.

6: All that effort, and then a tyre hugger? If a big stone goes in between the tyre and the hugger, you can say goodbye to either your tyre, or your huger, and maybe both.

My analysis. You, sir, are confused. Confused as to the gentre of the bike. It is meant to be an adventure sport, a tourer. Like the versys. The 200AS was meant as a sucessor to the 220. Make mods like this gentleman has. https://www.facebook.com/deepak.gupt...3719037&type=3

Mods 1-4 are for hardcore dirt bikes. Something you would do to prep a bike for the RDH. In that case, sir, you just bought the wrong bike. You should have bought a duke 200, and then prepped it out. like this KTM 200 Duke Grabs 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions in Raid-de-Himalaya

I dont really know what bike you are inspired by in making and listing all these mods, but then again, these are just my 2 paisa.

What you are trying to do, my friend, is to buy a Versys 650, and then spend a shitload of money trying to convert into a KLR650.

            DONT DO IT.

Sell it off, and buy a Himalayan. Or an impulse with a ZMA swap.

Thank you "sir"! I am in no way substituting the AS for a KLR. As the first post suggests, this bike is going to be thrashed offroad. Hence the mods. This is not going to be used as a tourer, yes, even though it has been marketed as one.

Took sometime to read through all the sarcasm and get useful info!

Surprising, since there was none intended.

I thought so too. And that is why I thought the AS200 is an odd bike to make these mods on. The Duke(200) would've been perfect, no?

Snatchy throttle, light, quick through gears, revs like a maniac. Thats like points 1-4 taken care of.

Another thing I forgot to add is, that while off roading, you need as little weight, and whatever weight you have, to be closer to the ground.
So, the first thing that should be coming off is the fairing. It will rattle itself to bits, give you a very high CoG, and will, in general, be a hindrance.

Good luck mate. Just that its not the best base bike for the kind of project that you've undertaken.

But then, nothing that extensive mods cant fix.

That mod fits the definition of an Adventure tourer to the T.

But, essentially most of the mods that Niranjan listed are more of hardcore dirt bike-ish mods(like the 690 enduro), rather than adventure tourer mods(like the Tiger 800).

And another thing I forgot to add in my previous replies is that for off-roading you need to have good GC, and good water wading abilities. And the AS200's under belly exhaust may be a somewhat of a problem. You might need to relocate the exhaust.
