  • QUERY: What exactly is a Performance Bike?

    Hi All,

I just want to get clarified on what exactly do people mean whey say "Performance bikes". This context is mainly used in higher CC bikes like more than 200CC. But I do not get what exactly the term performance means. Does this means more power and torque?

Pardon if this is totally noob or irrelevant question, but I just want to get the terms cleared up.

    GBD Approved

It is more of a concocted label, than anything else. What we consider performance bikes are essentially commuters. The lot of them!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Any motorcycle that gives you more performance than what you need and plasters a wide grin on your face everytime you wring the throttle is a performance bike for you.

Interesting question though you may not have meant it in a philosophical way. To my mind. As a generic definition I'd say a Performance motorcycle is one that, in its design, purposely gives preference to features that help you go fast, over other more practical considerations like fuel economy, comfort and luggage carrying capacity.
Typical attributes would be (relative to a non-performance motorcycle) higher power and torque, firmer suspension that works better at higher speeds, stronger brakes and could also include things like riding position and aerodynamic design.

Not sure if it answers your question!

Yes Thanks for a more specific answer.

The reason I asked this question is I'm currently in a dilemma between Gixxer and Apache 200. So I was asking in the other forum on my choices. One of the xbhpians mentioned something on the lines that Apache 200V is a performance motorcycle while Gixxer is not. So I just wanted a clarification on the terms.

Anyway, thank you for your inputs. I'm more clear now.

Well gixxer or Apache 200 both depends on the wrist of the rider, someone riding a Duke will feel both these bikes like average, while someone who rides a tvs victor will certainly feel both these bikes as fast and agile. Apache is definitely faster than the gixxer, 50cc more, but stability is doubtful because gixxer is a cornering junkie while the Apache provides straight line performance.

Apache is also so much known for its agility and handling. though gixxer offers superb handling, I believed that apache is on another level. Apache is one of the most agile bike out there which you can get for its price, or so I thought. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Most people are saying and auto journalists also that even though Apache 200is new, the pulsar 200 is much better in terms of vfm and performance. Cause it is one of the best pulsar till date. And between gixxer and Apache, the confidence that gixxer provides is far better than Apache IMO, wider tires & handlebar, compact bike dynamics and 41mm forks provides 95kmph highway rides feel like child's play. Best way to choose a bike is to ride it first, cause dynamics differ as because of weight height and experience. No matter how powerful good-looking or tech packed a bike is, it is only as good as the confidence it inspires in the rider.. 😁

Re: QUERY: What exactly is a Performance Bike?

Depends on the biking demographics you are in. In India, performance generally means more power(more ccs and bhps). It's a relative term as 'success'. For example, if one scores or earns higher than his cousin/neighbor's son, he will be termed as a performer. Doesn't matter if one actually has any substance in him or not. Only the numbers matter(marks in exam/salary you earn etc). Well, only sometimes!
For some people though, performance means something else. Ask any RD350 owner what is a performance bike from his point of view. His first answer surely will be RD350! Even if the person owns a RC390/NS200. People hardly call REs performance bikes though Res have 350cc/500cc hearts. But an RTR200/NS200? They are.
People are more likely to call an RX135 a performance bike rather than a 180cc Kawasaki Eliminator!
So, imo, a bike which gives you top notch pickup and handling, has top power to weight ratio and is not likely to cost you too much of those green papers can be called as a performance bike.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Re: QUERY: What exactly is a Performance Bike?

Apache 200 4V is not even out and people talk so much negative about it.

Gixxer is a good bike, has good cornering and with fairing it's good on highways and with 150cc it's a good bike and VFM for those looking to stay in 150cc range.
Apache bikes are Naked thus they make best of low weight and high cornering but highway riding with wind blast can get tiring quickly.
Apache bikes are Corner carvers and love to be put right on spot when they come to it without losing line as said by many reviews already out there so check those.
Bajaj 200 serious including RS and AS can also corner nicely but in many reviews as I have personally checked they are not corner carvers, and the bottom bars did touch in many cases so the bike is a cross between comfort and performance.

So do your research on the first ride reviews, then any long term reviews you can find on YouTube and other sites, then go personally and get a Test drive on each bike you have in your check list and see for yourself.

Everyone will provide an opinion but that don't mean it's written in stone including mine. So make the best in your own research and get the bike that makes sense to you.

Thanks for the input. I have already test ridden Gixxer and immensely impressed by its handling. If possible, I will TD Apache and will decide on one.

Thanks for the input. I have ridden Gixxer and very much impressed with it. The fact that Suzuki hasn't come up with any launch dates for Rear disc variants and that Apache will be on sale in another two weeks added to my dilemma. If possible will also TD Apache and will decide one.
