  • Initial impressions:MAK Scootech NXT engine oil:Honda Activa 2004

Never used any other oil other than Honda until now! As my Activa had just gone through a "make over" which was not from a Honda ASC (Auth. Service Center) I was facing real tough issues so thought that it is now really very safe to switch engine oil.
Issues with Genuine Honda Engine Oil:

None to speak. But I can still comment...
    1. It gives me poor fuel economy (30-35 kmpl also I ride it that way).
    2. Engine also get hot,REALLY HOT,too hot!!
    3. Also it is also Mineral oil for cost reasons.
    4. Cost maybe? Not sure as I never purchased oil other than 'OEM'.
well I may be nitpicking. These are problems I can still live with.

so which oil to go with? I decided to go to my 'Trusted' fuel station which is Bharat Petroleum there I saw 3 varieties a Honda OEM oil, MAK Mineral oil and MAK Semi-Synth. MAK Scootech NXT was specially made for automatic scooters as per company claim and it was satisfying my needs of oil grade i.e SAE grade,JASO certification etc as I would never change oil grade. Here are 2 screen shots from web sites which I think are official.

I love my ride though it gives me a few troubles and was desperate to change oil, mineral made no difference so only Semi-Synth was up.

    Mak Scootech NXT:
As it was Semi-Synth I had really high hopes opposed to mineral.I was told that I would need to change it every 5000 kms and top up whenever required, though I never top up oil in any of my vehicles as if it needs oil top up I take it as a serious matter why my ride is drinking oil? Seals gone, gasket leak, smoke, drain washer problem etc...
So Oil was changed as per my instructions on pump,in front of my own eyes for INR 250,after change no change was found.
I rode a few kms then engine started misfiring though it was a persistent problem from past 3-4 years(that is why low economy) even with honda oil,I though it was solved but wasn't.
I expected it would run smoother but not.
I was thinking it is not letting my engine heat easily and Bingo! my ride was comparatively cooler.
I was riding without attention on speedo thinking it would be around 45-50kmph but I was doing speedo indicated 60kmph a 100% improvement in top end and top speed.
Then comes the response time, though my Activa is having way higher response time than my Honda Shine it was a bit better than Honda oil.
So over all improvements are here but not as significant.
Note:These are my initial impressions, long term review still pending as it clocks miles it will soon be published.
My recommendation Go for it if you can pay that much it is same as Honda's if not better also I am yet to see it's Semi-Synth properties.

Final Review:MAK Scootech NXT engine oil

Okay so no one seems to be interested here, but I will still share my final opinion as I committed to do so in "Initial Impressions".
It has been about 5000 Km from last time and/or 6 months I just changed it. And yet again to the same oil but this time it was for 230 INR to my surprise!
The older oil held up together better than my expectations. Here are my observations:
      1. Engine heats less.
      2. Marginal improvement in fuel economy.
      3. Smoother through out the lifetime (I suspect that it would have pulled a few thousand KMs more without changing).
      4. A Superb improvement in sound!! On left my scooter sounds like Jet engine(thanks to 15yo CVT belt) and on right it sounds like a refined 4-stroker from Honda.
      5. Does not need oil changes at 5000 KMs (unlike I did) hence very cost effective!!
      6. Increase in top speed.(Seriously? Who does that on a automatic scooter? Well... ME I guess :P)
      7. Engine now feels and runs quiet effortless than before.
Now if I rejet and Tune my Carb I can get new like performance for sure!
Here are some pictures of the oil, which can help you understand a few things better like Oil Grade,Warnings, word about formulation etc.Click image for larger version
