  • Service schedule of less Odo bikes; Km-based vs Time-based

Hi bike Gurus of the forum,

As all of us know service intervals are based on kms or time interval, whichever is earlier. so just wanted to check what about the service interval for less ridden bikes, should they be serviced at regular intervals even they have run less kms or can they serviced after running the specified distance.

for ex: my avy service interval ~5000kms, but even though its my daily ride my annual running only around ~5K. so should i take it for service every 6months or i can get it done yearly.

    eagerly waiting for feedback.

MODS: please merge if similar tread exists

    GBD Approved

I cannot comment on what is the ideal thing to do. But...

When your bike is in warranty, follow the service routine as prescribed, else the company has another reason to void warranty.

After the warranty period has expired, you can probably service the bike as per kilometres. At least that is what i do. My motorcycle usage is minimal, my monthly running of my pulsar is barely 100km! From September 2015 to March 2016 i have done 750km on my Pulsar! So i service it every 2500km, whenever that happens. Of course that doesn't mean my bike is neglected, it is in perfect condition (at least as much as a 7 year old bike can be!).

So now you choose what you want to do
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Re: Service schedule of less Odo bikes; Km-based vs Time-based

The following is purely my personal opinion-

I had faced the same dilemma when I was in Pune and my daily run was less than 10Kms. Though the bike was parked in covered parking while at home, at office depending on the time i reached, i either got to park at a covered parking or an open parking. The bike was exposed to the natural elements.

Though the daily run was not much, it was still exposed to irregular riding conditions, like inch by inch in 1st gear at traffic, top gear runs at free roads, and at times pillion+shopping bags, etc etc.

So i used to give it for a service twice a year just to be on the safer side. So that the engine gets oil change, bike gets a thorough wash and any issues at all would be identified/addressed before they became too serious.

As a result, the bike has been running well for over 10yrs now! (not a minute of downtime) and if ever a time comes when I CANT take it for service in time, i still have the confidence that so far all the services were done before the KMs so the engine and the oil can take a little more.

In a Fill it and Forget it Bike, servicing is the only time I ever paid attention to anything.

Thanks Monk and Rugved for your feedback,

After reading your opinions i thought of doing it every 6 months just to make sure it runs without any issue.

As Monk & rugved mentioned, it is purely depends on each person.

But if your bike is new, then please follow the procedures mentioned on manual (time-interval/KMs whichever is earlier) to avail any warranty.

Later even the bike is less ridden, it is better to get the service done at least once in a 6 months. Because the dust will be accumulated in Air-Filter which reduces engine performance.

You can do it time based, but preferably change the engine oil at least twice a year, brake fluid and suspension oils once in 2 years.
Everything else will be fine with time based interval.
