  • Will GST affect prices of Superbikes?

    Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy Kawasaki ZX10R next year probably in Jan 17. Should I wait till GST is implemented (1st April 17)? I have read couple of articles that GST wont have any price reductions for CBU imports as well as Road Tax is excluded from GST. Also currently road tax in Maharashtra is 22% which is highest in India. I am afraid that if I wait for more months there would be an increase in x show price which would increase the on road price by couple of lakhs.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Will GST affect prices of Superbikes?

Now that quite a lot has been said and discussed about the Goods and Services Taxes or the GST, the automotive industry has a clearer picture regarding the tax slabs for cars. The GST tax slabs have been divided into four segments and these are 5 percent, 12 percent, 18 percent and 28 percent. While the first three slabs are for other industries, the automotive industry must look at the last or the 28 percent segment as this is the tax rate that will be applicable on cars. However, luxury cars will be levied additional taxes including the green tax and cess. Nevertheless, clarification regarding which cars come under the purview of luxury cars is not yet defined by the panel and the automotive industry is keeping a close watch on the proceedings to know this.
At present the taxes for cars settle at around 28 percent, so the overall impact of the GST will not be too much and the prices will remain the same. In the present tax system, the cars that measure less than four meters in length with engine displacement being less than 1200 cc and 1500 cc for petrol and diesel, respectively fall under the small car segment. This segment includes cars like Tata Nano, Datsun Redigo, Maruti Alto and Renault Kwid. Other cars in other segments, namely, the sedans and the hatchbacks, the crossovers and the SUVs, will now be classified in the same category of 28 percent tax.
It was expected that the small cars would be charged only 18 GST and this would help lower their prices which will further boost their demand. Nevertheless, the rate of 28 percent of tax seems to be the order of the day and all cars will now have more or less the same taxation structure unless they are from the luxury segment which attracts more taxes.
