Slipper clutch is now a quite familiar term in India as Duke 390 had an slipper clutch update and now Bajaj dominar comes with slipper clutch as standard feature. As a learner I can't really understand its working. I googled about it and found "during downshifts it partially slips the clutch until engine speed matches your speed." Do slipper clutch even works if we downshift even without operating clutch lever?

Re: Slipper Clutch Vs Engine Braking
I just recently got me a RC390.. still running in the bike. To answer your question, yes, i do hear a distinct whistling sound once in a while on downshifting or while rolling off the throttle in the lower gears. I think that's the "anti hop" (as KTM calls it on their website) at work. Before buying the bike i took a test ride of an older model that didn't have this slipper function and i found that it took a lot more effort to pull the clutch, enough to cause discomfort while using two fingers (the absurdly long reach to the clutch lever didn't help either). Whether the light clutch activation is because of the slipper function, i do not know.Originally posted by hariiharan View PostHello everyone!
I am new to this awesome community. Has been a silent observer for few years now, and this is my first attempt to participate. I have a query for which I still couldn't get a proper answer yet. Slipper Clutch Vs Engine Braking.. Does slip clutch affect engine braking? My understanding of slipper clutch:
1) Aggressive downshift induces wheel hops which are controlled by the slip clutch, so basically it rev matches
2) Good for tracks when you want to go into the corners in a more controlled way so you can gun out of it
Engine braking:
1) Close the throttle and let the piston struggle for air, which causes the engine to slow down rather than just relying on the hydraulics and pads..
I just booked my Duke 390 and will be getting it in couple of days.. Now despite all the excitement i went through some reviews which explained that slipper clutch might reduce engine braking
Even after frantically looking for the connection between the two on the internet, is still a grey. How much truth is behind this? Can some experienced riders throw some light on this?
Note: I searched through multiple threads and couldn't find anything close to it, so decided to start a thread. Hope this is not breaking any of the rules/regulations of the forum.
On the 390 the braking you get from shutting the throttle can sometimes be so strong it's almost like using the rear brake! But, I agree with @abhimanyu31 that it isn't desirable to use the engine as a brake. Anyway, whether you do it deliberately or not, engine braking is still present when downshifting and entering a corner and it's good to have this slipper aid especially on a bike like the 390. I think the idea is not to bang down the gears mindlessly, but to compensate for some sloppiness while doing so and also to deal with the engine braking which can be inconsistent. (BTW, a good/expert rider can do this manually by modulating the clutch.)Last edited by incipient; 01-02-2017, 02:34 AM.
