• Unique Identification Numbers on a Motorcycle?

Hi,
Apart from the license plates, what are other numbers that can be found on a motorcycle that can uniquely identify the vehicle?
I am asking this because I plan to scrap my Bajaj Discover for parts and want to make sure that all of these numbers are scratched away.

Thanks.

The registration number can be changed as the bike can be re-registered. The engine and chassis number is unique to every automobile.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Hi ,

If you want to scrap your old bike without any issues,
1. Make a deal with the scrap dealer. Give/Sell the vehicle.
2. Get the chassis number and engine number from the bike ( hard piece - cut it out from the bike )
3. Don't let him do anything else
4. Write a letter to RTO in an A4 stating that your vehicle is of no use and you want to scrap it.
5. Submit the letter, RC , engine number and chassis number ( original - cut out ) ,Insurance , Photographs of engine number and chassis number , Pollution Certificate , Identity Proof copy etc to your RTO
6. RTO will verify the details. He will check for any registered issues/complaints ( crimes & all ) is existing or not. Also like if you have paid the tax or pending is there.
7. Once the verification is complete he will approve , issue a certificate and will cross your RC certificate.
8. Then you can proceed with scraping process

Please note crossing the RC book is mandatory and then only they will cross the entry from their register. Otherwise if the entry is not removed from their side , tax pending will occur as you don't pay tax and RR will come in your name later.
For OTT bikes , no issues of tax. Also keep a copy of all docs for the next three years to be in the safe side.
This is the procedure that we followed when we had to give our old bike ( HH CD100SS - 18 +years ) for scrap at Thrissur. Maybe there will be variation in the procedure in other places.

Thanks

Its good to know that there is a proper procedure to scrap a motorcycle, and get it removed from the RTO register. But is this really necessary. I mean what are the odds that could happen if a vehicle is not scraped properly as mentioned by above procedure(which is what usually followed in many places i guess)?

I am asking this question because my old motorcycle was put to scrap due to a building collapse on my bike in my native place(unfortunately took 3 more human life's who were working on that demolition activity), and that bike was left to rust in police station because of the case for 1 year or so, then they scraped the vehicle. Since my Brother in Law was taking over the charge, i did not enquire much about this issue. But I am sure that bike cannot be used as the concrete slab which fell on the bike damaged the engine casing and bent the chassis very much.

And thanks for sharing a new information mathewkakkassery
