  • Thinking About The BMW G310 GS

Now that I've sold my KTM Duke 390 there is a void in my garage which isn't looking nice. There isn't any motorcycle available in India at the moment that can fill this void. But there is one motorcycle that's due to be launched towards the end of this year which has peaked my interest quite a bit. The BMW G310 GS.

This motorcycle would have been perfect for my recent ride around the Annapurna Circuit and should be perfect for similar rides that I'm planning in the months and years to come. Rides which involve quite a bit of highway riding and quite a bit of trail riding.

The alloy wheels of this GS run tubeless tyres which make a puncture fix shorter than a stop for tea. I've never liked spokes for this sole reason. I'm not rallying off-road anyway. So I really don't need the strength that spoked wheels provide.

The top speed of 140 kmph is more than enough for me. I don't exceed 110 kmph on highways anyway. I'm assuming this motorcycle should feel great sitting at 110 kmph for the whole day.

Coupled with the long travel front suspension, the 19 inch front and 17 inch rear wheel combination should be good for off-road use. My Triumph Tiger 800 XRx shares this same combination but has a longer wheel base. The shorter wheelbase of this GS will mean that I will be able to overcome obstacles a lot easier as compared to the Tiger.

I love the fact that the motorcycle comes ready with a tail rack to fit a top case and I won't need to fabricate something. I'm not a fan of panniers and saddle bags. They increase the width of the motorcycle which poses a problem when riding off road. So if I can make do with a lockable top case and a removable tank bag then I think I'm sorted.

The only things I would add are a crash guards to protect the engine and side panels and hand guards to protect the hand levers. Maybe swap the tyres with a pair of Continental TKC 80's for good on and off-road performance.

The small 11 litre fuel tank capacity worries me though. But that's something which can be fixed by carrying fuel when required.

But the best part of this motorcycle is its weight. With a kerb weight of just 158 kgs, its actually 5 kgs lighter than the Duke. I've ridden my Duke off road quite a bit. It feels nimble and is very easy to flick around and have fun. I'm thinking the BMW G310 GS should feel the same.

And last but not the least. Its a BMW. I expect the quality to be superior.

Yeah, come to think of it, the BMW G310 GS would fill the void in my garage perfectly. :-)

    All that he said^^^

I am waiting for this as well. Would be perfect for touring in India. This or the rumoured KTM adventure bike based on the 390.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

@deelip and The Monk same here. I am eagerly waiting for this. But this seems like a distant possibility at this juncture as BMW have been postponing their G310r for quite some time.
Only if G310r does well, then they will look to launch this, is what I feel. Many top guys are hesitant to launch their adventure versions in India as they do not find many who have mindset like you and they know it's common masses who help their business flourish not one odd adventurer. But since motorcycle traveling is peaking day by day, I am keeping my hopes alive for something like G310 GS. Let us hope for the best.

I hope, and I think you would too, that you're proven wrong![emoji17]

After aggressive pricing of dominar, and state of d art electronics in ktm390, I think bmw is scared to launch it's g310r in India.

I think you should also consider Benelli TRK 502, IT has bigger engine more power and torque for both highway and off roading use. Its twin cylinder will be much smoother than any single mill any day.

Benelli TRK502 not a great bike for touring. Thanks to its weight and less power it generates which only makes it a struggle to pull so much.

I think you should wait for TRK launch and test ride it before coming to any conclusion.Any bike around 500cc weighs close to 200kgs and I believe 48bhp would be enough to make you cruise at 110 kmph all day long

The TRK won't make sense to me. I already have a Triumph Tiger 800 XRx. What I need is a light and nimble adv bike that I can thrash around on trails without worrying too much. I have the Hero Impulse for trails, but the power is way too less for highway use. So I'm think this baby GS may be a good "best of both worlds" kind of a thing.

Re: Thinking About The BMW G310 GS

                      Hi Deelip,
I think the only reason for the delay is that they're now sorting out sales and service networks before launch later this year. It has,
#180mm travel for both front and rear suspension. (Same as himalayan in rear and almost in front).
#33.3kmpl (as per Motorrad site), so 300+ kms range is enough for sorted road networks. Extra fuel can be planned for rural and extreme offroad circuits.
#No ELECTRONIC STUFF except Switchable ABS is a great thing.
#for the quality part, from codenameABK's riding video we can conform it's usual bmw's standard and the 120kmph cruising is its sweet-spot.
#34ps for onroad performance and good 28nm for load lugging,off-road capabilities.
                      #820mm(low_height),835mm and 850mm(comfort) Seat heights.
#Top box(as your requirement),heated grips, aux lamps, etc and many more accesories are there in the motorrad list, so one can buy as per their need and money.
I hope this checked all your check boxes and suits your type of touring to the T. I Wish the months move fast so that we can have this thing in our disposal.

I surely believe the price will be fixed competitively.

Ps:Your touring videos was great to watch!
