  • Fuel can mounting on Duke 200

    Dear all,

Please suggest how to mount fuel can at leg gourd area... I have a tour Kolkata to Sikkim with my wife... There is no fuel pump in between 430 km. So carrying a fuel can 5 litter each side...
    Thanks in advance...

    Topic Approved.

Forget the leg guard area, its unsafe, as the heated exhaust pipe goes from there. Instead, focus on either side of the rear wheel.

You might have to get this done custom.
One way is to attach the hard can's holders on both sides of the bike and get them attached to grab rail attachments. Remove the grab rail for this. Please note that if improperly done, this may cause the screw grooves on your trellis frame to loosen up due to weight involved. Keep this in mind:-

    1. The hard-can's attachments must be equal on both sides in size and weight, so they're balanced.

    2. They should be connected under the seat so that they remain in middle and don't jerk downwards everytime you face a bump, and their weight should rest downwards.

    3. Apply rubber washers on the screws to absorb some negative impact/ jerks.

However, let's be a little open minded.
Seeing petrol cans might attract the Police's attention.
Also, recently, a guy trying a Golden Quadilateral fast run crashed near Chennai and his additional fuel tank broke and caused a fire, burning the guy's motorcycle completely. Thankfully he managed to escape any major injury/ death as he was fully geared.
So, be careful, your bike must not crash anyhow with additional fuel onboard in a hard can like setup!

Since you're only concerned about carrying fuel, my suggestion would be to get strong-fabric side bags from reputed companies like Viaterra or so.
You may carry fuel in strong plastic bottles from Cello or Tupperware or other brands. Get 6 bottles of 2 litres each, that's it.

This is a much safer way. Plus you can carry some more luggage with you too. I have these on my Duke 390 already for some years.

Since these bags are about 36 litres total, you will easily be able to carry 10 litres of fuel on both sides.

You might have to special-order them, but there's a company called Rotopax that makes fuel cans specifically for mounting on motorcycles. They use a special bracket system that locks their cans onto the bike, but the brackets have lots of options for where they can be mounted.

Be extremely careful about carrying fuel in a container that isn't explicitly designed for it. Gasoline is a powerful solvent, and many plastics will break down when exposed to it, some immediately and some over time. Using an empty soda bottle to get some gas to your bike form a station 5 or 10 minutes away because you ran out is one thing. Carrying fuel in one for several days is quite different.

The other issue you face is, where is all your stuff going to go? You're planning a long tour 2-up, so you're going to have to carry a significant amount of luggage e.g. clothing, hygiene supplies etc, plus your passenger, and you also want to carry 20kg of fuel? Will your bike even move with all that piled on it?
