  • ABS or Slipper and assists clutch; which one is more important?

    Hi Brothers,

I have been thinking about this a lot but have not come one with a satisfactory answer. I am sorry if its a noob question, please forgive your little brother for his stupid questions.

    My question is :

Why are manufacturers keen on providing a slipper and assist clutch rather than ABS?? Why do slipper clutch have a higher priority than ABS?

We saw the same thing on baby ninja300 and now the R15V3. I have been riding for close to 9 years now; 4 of which are on a R15V2 (March 2014 model, still going strong). In nearly a decade of riding I have never felt the need of an assist and slipper clutch, either in daily commuting or on long tours. But I definitely have felt the need of ABS countless times. The 2 spills I had on my V2 (panic braking due to a jaywalker on phone) in past 4 years could have been avoided if I had ABS. So in my humble opinion and 9 years on the saddle, I feel the need of ABS much more than the Assist and slipper clutch.

You see most of us who buy these bikes don't even have a race track in our cities. So the main purpose of buying it is for daily commuting, (and if you are crazy like me) for touring. And in both these scenarios ABS is much more needed than a slipper clutch (Just my opinion). Yes, a slipper clutch might do wonders on a race track and it might save your wheel from hopping on a fast corner and you might get a blistering lap time, but how many people who buy the bike are going to use or need that feature in day today riding? And even if you do take it to the track, its 1% of its entire life, the other 99% of times the bike is going to be on public roads where you don't need to kiss the apex, but you need to be on the look out for dogs running on the road suddenly, cows, pigs, other animals and people behaving like animals. Any of these situations will have you grabbing a handful of the front brake and that's when you need the ABS.. It happens every day, sometimes several times in a single day.

I can ride without a slipper clutch all my life without any worries, it will not affect my riding in any way, but I surely need ABS and I need it yesterday.

Am I missing some key info here which makes Slipper clutch more important than ABS? Please enlighten me....

I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

    GBD Approved

If you ask me, you need neither. All that you need is better braking skill!!!

But yes ABS is significantly more important than a slipper clutch. Especially in smaller bikes. In bigger bikes, the back torque that those humongous engines produce can be problematic if you downshift inappropriately. But smaller engines hardly produce any power to warrant a slipper clutch. More like a marketing gimmick by companies to appear safer.

Because as far as i know, a slipper clutch is much cheaper than a ABS unit. I could be wrong here. So the cost of installing one over the other and making the bike appear to have more safety features.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

The slipper clutch is a concept related to engine braking scenarios. It does not allow your rear wheel to lose traction during aggressive downshifts i.e prevents wheel hopping, skid or sometimes even a full crash. When you disengage the clutch for your downshift, the wheel is free and it develops a certain torque of its own and tries to match your engine RPM, thus causing the high revs in the engine. Back-torque not only stresses your engine but also damages your gearbox significantly. Slipper clutch ensures that your wheel doesn't from locking, skidding, or hopping under harsh "engine braking" situations. A slipper clutch is not just meant for track noobies. Imagine you trying to slow down on a wet patch or loose gravel before you think of pulling your clutch you'll be tasting tarmac.

ABS, on the other hand, just prevents wheel lock under panic braking situations and is more endemic to the braking system.

Both try to ensure the same thing - your wheel must stay put to the tarmac, irrespective of whether you use your engine to brake or hit just grab your front and back lever bang on.

According to me effective braking negates the need for ABS. But I'd want a free-revving engine on the long run and the same time stay safe before entering a corner or on bad roads. Hence slipper clutch.

      Hope this helped! Cheers!

Without a doubt ABS is more important.

Under hard breaking almost all of the weight is transferred onto the front wheels. ABS can stop the front wheel from locking up.

A slipper clutch is not going to help you slow down any better that not having it.

And for road use ABS is useful far more than a slipper clutch

You seem to be wondering why the bike manufacturers put in a slipper clutch rather than abs. Simple reason is cost, as Monk said. They would prefer to add a feature that wouldn't affect the sales too much due to the resulting price hike.
