    Excess glucose adversely affects the fluid balance of our body. Excess sugar prompts release of a strong portion of insulin to get it out of the bloodstream and store it away for future use. This conversion process demands water and also results in an increased blood flow to the liver, withdrawing blood from the digestive process. So, shortage of water and bloodflow to the stomach usually results in cramps.

    Almost the same thing happens with the muscles. Excess sugar upsets the electrolyte and salt balance of the body. This in turn affects the muscle-nerve communication. And the muscles find it difficult to dispose off the lactic acid produced while they work. So muscle cramps pop out too.

    The best option is to have a periodic intake of 'electrolyte' type salt-based drinks with a sweetened drink or two thrown in between, for that immediate energy boot, through a long riding day. And in the cold high mountains of areas like Ladakh/Spiti, sweetened tea is the best perk-up drink....and hot thin soups with a bit of extra salt are real life givers.
