  • Labor Charge scam at Bajaj Authorized service center

    Hi Guys,

    I would like to shed light upon the scam like charges imposed during motorcycle service at Bajaj Authorized Service center in Bengaluru.

    To begin with, I own a Bajaj Avenger 220 street which is 3 years and 2 months old and the odometer reads 59000 km. I have regularly serviced my bike till date and the next service was due for 60000 km.

    Since the front disk plate and pads have worn out I decided to do the early service at 58700 km.
    I stay at BTM layout Bengaluru and the nearest service center is BTM Amba Bajaj so I decided to leave my bike for service there.

    Upon inspection, the service rep informed me that below parts need to be replaced.
    1) Disk plate and pads
    2) Right fork oil seal
    3) Chain sprocket (Existing one had run only 14000 km, It was making minor sound and asked them to look into. Replacing was the only solution given by him)

    He gave the estimation of 6500 ₹. In not so happy mood, I returned back to home. A few hours later I got a call from service rep again informing me that clutch plates need to be replaced. I didn't have any problem with the same but he advised me that pickup has dropped and it needs to be replaced. Once they scare you of the technical things about you can't deny it. I just agreed for that too. He told it would cost me additional 1700₹.

    In the evening I got a call from the service center that bike is ready after service and when I saw the bill I was horrified. The amount they charged was whopping 11700 ₹ !!!!.

    Upon inspecting the bill I noticed that they have replaced cone set without my concern. Existing cone set had absolutely no issues and replacement of the cone set had cost me additional 1223 ₹.

    Upon questioning about so high cost of labor charges and few unexplained items in Spares bill service adviser's answer was constant: "Sir this bill is computer generated and we can't manipulate it in any way.'

    After arguing about this insane labor charge, service adviser finally agreed to give me so-called 'discount' of 1400 ₹ out of 'computer generated bill'.

    Just a glance at labor bill shows that Bajaj has some unique money making idea out of customers who give the vehicle to service.
    For each of the items replaced they bill separate Labour charge. The funniest part is Fork oil change. Fork oil costs 100₹ whereas labor charge is 442₹.
    same for cone set. Cone set 368 ₹, Labour: 855 ₹

    And guys please correct me if I am wrong, tappet adjustment and carburetor cleaning aren't the part of paid service? If no, where can we see the services covered under 'Paid service' charges?

    Another fishy part in the labor bill is 'Unit' for each of the Labour Code. For eg: Carburetor cleaning has Units of 3.3!!! Does anyone have an idea about these units? Price of each item is multiplied by these units.

    Spare part bill has plenty of items which are not explained by service advisory in a satisfactory way.

    This whole procedure of including additional non required spares and putting heavy labor charge seems to an organized scam by Bajaj Service center or Bajaj Itself. I have raised a complaint against BTM Amba Bajaj regarding the same in Bajaj portal which as usual has no response. I also wrote a complaint to customerservice@bajajauto.co.in which is just a waste of effort (Even manager at Service center carelessly ignored my warning of the complaint, comfortably stating Bajaj customer service doesn't exist!!!).

    Please suggest how we can proceed to stop such daylight robbery by Bajaj and so-called 'Bajaj Authorised service centers'. Your feedback will be of great value.

      Sir, a crankshaft bearing costs Rs.350/- but the labour for replacing the same is Rs.3,500/-.

      Just like that it would be wrong to estimate labour cost based on consumable cost. Because the labour charges is estimated depending on the complexity and man-hours required to perform the work in question.

      Personally for me, it would take at least a few hours to overhaul the front end to my satisfaction, if a mechanic does the same to make sure every minor detail is in order, then I'd consider it a win, because he could go the other way and still charge me the same amount since we have a fixed costs system.

      P.S. Its stupid to overhaul only one fork at a time, suspension components should always be overhauled together for both sides.

      P.P.S [MENTION=23793]mod[/MENTION]s! For the love of Motorcycling, when you're done milking the ad revenue, please fix this recurring bug of posts getting deleted when editing to add info.

        First and foremost, escalate with Bajaj by email.
        Nowadays be it my Bike or car, i always stay back at the service center and strictly instruct the service adviser to perform all jobs after my approval. I think sparing couple of hours for service will help you a lot- You avoid being fleeced and you can make sure the work is done.
        PS- Last some while getting the car serviced, one of the mechanics while shifting the car to the bay was slotting the reverse gear even when the car hadn't completely stopped hereby creating a loud grinding noise. Gave some nice gyaan to the mechie in front of the works manager.

          I agree that labour charges is estimated depending on the complexity, but look at this case, They have replaced the Disk plate along with the fork oil change. Don't you think labour charges for each of the related items separately is pretty dumb? ie:
          Fork Oil change: 442 Rs
          Steering O/h :442 Rs
          Wheel Removal and fitment :177 Rs
          and Disk brake bleeding :160 Rs

          Aren't all the above tasks are related to one another? I am pretty sure they didn't remove the wheel for disk plate change and refitted it and again removed it for Fork oil change.

          Have done it already but as expected there is no response from them. Indeed even the service guy laghed at me and told, 'nothing is going to happen if I write mail to Bajaj Service' when I warned him about escalating the issue.

          No doubt its the best way. But these authorized service centers wont allow us to monitor their job.

            Thought the same when I once got my front end overhauled at the ASC due to lack of time and got a bill of about 5k, when if I'd just taken the time I could've done it in under 1k with ease, including new springs that is.

            But then since Bajaj follows a fixed rate than hourly rate, there is no point in arguing, because the combinations are plentiful and you cannot expect to fix a price on every such option.

            Best means of getting the job done is to invest in tools and take the DIY route, that's how I go.

            Plus for the money you'd paid the SVC you could've bought yourself all the tools, special tools and even an impact driver, which would last you through several rebuilds on several motorcycles.

            The fixed system is the same even for Kawasaki's IIRC, they cannot bill you anything other than what is already present in their system, discounts being a different concern.

                Above reply is not helping. We all know how much labour time and energy it will take to change the cone set or fork oil. There is no need to emphasis it here. Customer felt cheated and they should have not changed the other parts without the customer approval.

                    An average Joe(like me) will surely not be able to go the DIY way all the time. That's where the ASCs take advantage. The erstwhile Yamaha Factory Outlet in north Kolkata used to be my favorite service center. Now the outlet has been taken over by a franchise and most of the veteran mechanics have left . A month back, I went to the service center complaining about a noise - I was advised to change almost the entire front assembly(including disc pad, brake, cables and so on). Estimated bill was 2K+. Went to a local garage - some minor adjustment was done including tappet adjustment and I'm running my bike without any problems since then. Cost? Rs. 100! I can mention several such instances from that ASC only in the last two years. I've stopped recommending the outlet to others.
                    If Bajaj does not choose to work upon your complaint as the ball is in their court(customer service, nodal office, twitter etc), you always have other options which Bajaj(and for that matter any organization)don't have an option to ignore. Go to consumer court. Complain online and when the service manager/area manager 'has' to be personally appear to present their side of the argument in front of the court, you can expect a better outcome. My personal experience says that. And one of the famous furniture manufacturers in north Kolkata knows that very well.
