  • Tech Info: Slipper Clutch.

When riding 4 stroke bike and u down shift really quickly, ever notice how the rear wheel tends to lock up a bit this problem is more apparent in the bigger 4 sroke bikes coz of the massive amount of engine braking the motor develops and the same problem is almost non existant in two strokes coz their motors hardly have any engine braking.Which is why there has been such a big fuss over the switch from two to four strokes in motogp, coz riders have had to change their riding style.

What the slipper clutch(also called back torque limiter) does is as soon as it senses the rear wheel locking up or in more basic setup's as soon as a preset amount of back torque is reached,it disengages the clutch from the engine ,though not fully, so that all the engine braking generated by the motor is not transferred to the rear wheel which in turn prevents the rear wheel from locking up.

until recently these type of clutches were only available on higher end italian bikes like the Aprilia's and the Ducati's but starting from '04 the new ZX10R's have got the slipper clutche's as well heaven knows,, they need it. dunno bout the other Japanese bikes.

well, one way to get around this would be to blip the throttle..ofcourse, slipper clutch really helps..other than the kawis, no other japanese bikes come with the slipper clutch...you can buy one for like USD 800...

bikecrazy, whats up..I have heard (dont have any first person contacts that use it) that STMs are good and they cost like usd 1200..typically one doesnot need a slipper clutch on street..just blip the throttle while downshifting and you wont have that rear wheel hop..you can save some fractions of seconds here and there in the track (which eventually leads to a good lap time )

nice old Bikecrazy : this should be in the tech terms thread .

and youre right , so far onlt the ZX10R has a slipper clutch among the rice rockets ( not countin' the race bikes )

This thing is alien to me... I know that bigger bikes do have a significant amount of engine braking available... Havent tried it at higher speeds tho.. Didnt know that it causes the wheel to lock up and hop around... Scary!

              Hey,

the best way to avoid the rear hop is blipping the throttle as u down shift, just like oiler said.

ken, even 600s have significant wheel hop (at good speeds) if you dont match the roadspeed to the rpm when you downshift

no Sabby , Hayabusa doesn't have slipper clutch .

Ken , even my Karizma does sometimes slide its rear tyres when I downshift ( when tyres are cold usually - that's engine braking , maybe HHML could gimme a slipper clutch too ?? )

I've felt that too Ricci... and ur right, thats when the tyres are cold - but I've experienced that mostly at lower speeds...
