Welcome to xBhp buddy! Great info there. Didn't know about the master card. Will ask the RTO officials in my area.
It's sad that even after carrying all the documents and wearing a helmet, the cops stopped me several times for checking the documents.

Will policemen stop me for checking documents?
All police officers have been clearly instructed not to stop motorists to merely check documents. Only if a motorist commits some traffic violation can he be stopped, his documents checked, and be penalized.
i was stopped today un necessarily just for checking the documents ...to waste the time..usually they dont stop people wearing helmet..but today everyone going through that stretch was being stopped.even cars and old aged people...as i was having all documents and was wearing helmet and was going below 40kmph, was let off in 5 mins..he didnt even bother to check if the documents was proper..he just wanted money...thats all in his mind...

Very nice as long as you are hailed by good cops. Problem is, most of the time these policemen will ask for your license, and then tells you to collect them from police station. They know very well that most commuters have no time to go through the hassel and would gladly pay something. Yes, you can insist on a receipt, however you have to collect it from the police station while paying fine. Seems these policemen also does their homework.

I doubt if thats how it works. They are supposed to carry a reciept book and give you a receipt for the fine on the spot. Only here it seem that even traffic constables can do it.

And really, if anybody is being wrongly harrassed, you should be able to fight for it. Ask to speak to the cop's superior or lodge a complaint with the traffic dept. or whatever else. Do your part of the job... just cribbing won't help anything.

Yep, suppose to. But like I said, it depends on whether you come acorss a good/bad cop. You should see some of the policemen, they'll simply pocket your license cooly and tells you to pick it up at the police station. I know they are not suppose to do that, its just that most does that. Its all smooth and easy to the point of being indifferent. They won't even demand fine or such, because they know whats coming next. Perhaps one can get things your way after raising some heckle, in this case the policemen will also make sure you don't get your way easily. Just make your life a little miserable.

I accept there are upright citizens who'll stick to their guns and make sure everything goes by the book. However Im afraid, unless such individuals make up a majority of the populace, we'll continue to see these policemen at traffic lights waiting to prey on us.

I was stopped a couple of months back. en route to the railway station. I was in a hurry but was going slow. I had to pop open the seat and get the soaked, faded xerox copy of the 'copy of rc' from bank. The cop was very nice. he took the paper and made me read the engine number and chassis number from the bike and let me go. Took 15 minutes.

my dad would have never let me drive. But i always get into some kinda deal with the cops last month i went to chennai and i jumped a signal (If i had not the car in the back would have hit me he was caught too) near 1000 lights signal and was caught the cop said separate fines for jumping the signal and for having big horns .I had no choice but to pay Rs250 as bribe(after a lot of pleading) i think i got away Cheap.

                          Bump.

This is a good thread and I don't want to let it die.

                          1. Can anyone let me know the legal fine for driving without helmet in Chennai?

                          2. Is it possible to get a smart card in Chennai?

police in lucknow has become quite cheap ....

few days back i was coming back to home from my college ... a cop [hawaldar ] stopped me ... i was wearing helmet ... he said "kaise chala rahe ho " i said "kaise chala raha hu? " he surely wanted money i sensed . he then asked for papers , i showed him the green card [master card you ppl call .. in UP its a green card] he then checked my plates and F*** the rear one was illegal .... the number is 8220 nd on my plate its a big 220 written with a microscopic 8 written above b/w the screws.

he asked "chalan kataoge ki paise doge" i was like WTF bribing openly....
i said "uncle i am college goer i dont have money" he asked for 200rs. but i asked him to do the chalan .... then the poor fellow asked me how much money i was having ....
i said 20rs. he said "de do aur bhaago yaha se"
i gave him 20rs. nd zoomed off.

                            police sucks.
