Clutchless gear shifting??
I read many threads on the internet where people have mentioned that clutchless shifting actually reduces wear and tear. Now I was pretty amazed to see that many experienced riders do not use clutch while upshiting i.e. clutchless upshift. I haven't really understood the concept though and I'd really like to know more about it. Does it mean I dont have to press clutch while shifting into a lower gear, for example, during a singnal? Some light here all experienced people...

@gaurav: Shifting to higher gears can be done without using the clutch. Its called power shifting. You should do it at the right instant at high revs during hard acceleration. Its done by all GP racers to save like a few fractions of a seconds or more. But on normal bikes too much clutchless shifting can be harmful to the gearbox. But downshifting requires a clutch on all bikes except ones with a slip/slider clutch.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.Riding is a way of life. Sometimes, it might also be a way of giving life. So Ride safe. In both contexts.

You need shift at right RPM and Speed, else it will get stuck.
Practise makes clutchless shift perfect.
But always remember, new clutch plates are cheaper than new gearbox...
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I regularly clutchless upshift on my pulsar 180 classic. is quite easy once you get the hang of it. just dip the throttle a bit and shift up. have done this at upto 7000-8000 revs without any problems....
I can also easily manage downshifts without the clutch, but I avoid that unless I have a good bit of clear road ahead of me, and there is no risk in practicing...Torque nut in the land of horsepower worshippers.

Why does downshift sound so risky? And why do you need a clear road ahead of yours? I mean, it's a downshift afterall, so, you're reducing the speed and gears eh?

not so much risky as much as me not being fully accustomed to it, and the fact that on a pulsar classic gearbox it is not that easy, and therefore, I try it only when it is an empty road and I have to stop anyway.... so that just in case I am not able to down a gear in time, I do not have to concentrate on that car or truck getting bigger and bigger in my helmet visor...., just on the clutch....Torque nut in the land of horsepower worshippers.

Clutch dont play much on my Enfield and I dont use it on low RPM.... I have the same feel even when I use the Clutch....Passion as Profession

Jawa / Yezdi is the ony bike with auto clutch. Clutchless shifting in 2-wheelers possible because the gearbox runs at slower speed than the engine. I don't know about the new generation bikes but the old bikes and scooters don't have synchromesh gears either. More or less clutchless gearshifting affects gearbox and clutch wire..!!
as said by experienced mechanic of our showroom (mahindra and mahindra) as we deals in 2-wheelers also.sigpic
