This may not be surprised because four years ago my Unicorn was also half drowned in the water (engine was almost drowned) while riding on Bangalore streets during heavy rains, I had a pillion rider we could not guess the dept of water and moved on, unfortunately the bike turned OFF and started again in next five minutes.

Im sure all the indian manufacturers litterally dump the engine into a tank of water during the testing process...thats the only way i see an engine starting up after being submerged like my friend's bike was the other day.

Why dont we call it ur friend ' s luck ?

Well anyways I ve seen a KB100 survive a ride into a lake once. Back in college PUC me n me mates and me had found this lil dirt track near the byrasandra lake in 1st block Jayanagar B'lore that we used practise on and my friend who had this KB decided that he wanted to ride on the dry lake bed and learn to control a skidding bike on grass had me as pillion and we took off. Hehehe only thing being the dry lake bed was nt dry after 10 or 15 'kin yards and suddenlly the the bike was caught up in weed the engine shut off and we felt ourselves sinking. hehehehe. F**k! We some how managed to pull the bike outta that muck the 4 of us with brute muscle power. By this time we hade the choiciest of water weed on the bike and the bike was proper water logged. But with a few kicks the KB started up and water came outta that silecer pipe like it was a hose and the engine a water pump. Like you know a steady stream for like a good 5 minutes or so. Then the bike was fine. Very dirty with muck and all kinds of crap but the bike survived only for Nizam my friend to crash it two days later on that dirt track trying to beat a time I had set on my puny Hero Puch.

Insane times those were.

FYI no engine shoild be started like that if it was submerged in water

my old kinetic honda once got submerged in water.I kept it for 1 full day..and it didnt start at all.I had to take it to a mechanic to replace some parts to make it work again...kinetic really suks..

I had a small experience where my splendor was almostly in 2 feet rain water, it was almostly for 4 hrs in water all i need was pushed a bit on a height so its silencer cn come out of water and i just lifted the front wheel with sm1s help so tht the water frm silencer flows out and thn gve sm choke and started the bike after 10 kicks it was up kept it running under full acceleration for 5 mins and thn continued my ride with my bike, i even crossed water touching to my knees bt nthing happened to my bike. i had many experiences where water is above my silencer but i never allow my bike to turn off i keep at times running on choke or heavy accelaration also if i feel the water shd be avoided in all costs to enter the silencer.

This story was of 2005 when was studying 12Th in rajasthan..i was returning from School.There was a great down pour since last 3 days and lite drizzle on that day.School was over and i was on half the way to my home on my new TVS scooty.Suddenly there was flood of water coming and engulfing the road and every one on the street was in panic about the the huge stream of water on the road.In hurry i road my scooty to nearby pathway which was around 2 feet high.with in half an hour my scooty was totally engulfed by water.I erected it on main stand and i climbed it stood on it seat to protect my self from water.Water touched my toes while i was standing on its seat.My scooty totally drowned in water.With in next an hour water level dropped.I with the help 2 other people erected it on back type to completely drain water fro silencer.When i asked about the water they told that water came as dam in nearby village broke and it completely submerged the village and now came to our city.The waited for 15 min and kicked the kick rod.To my sunrise it started on one kick!!!!.Thanks to TVS.I rode to home happly.I was just to reach home some strange noise started appearing from scooty.I took it to nearby mechanic.He drained the engine oil.It was in Yellowish pink color as thick as heated coal Tar and about one and half litre of the came out(double the capacity).He confirmed that main bearing on the connecting shaft had gone bad.It drilled a hole in my pocket as it costed 950Rs to change from authorized tvs service center and I had to bear it from my pocket money at that time to avoid bashing at my home..

well since everybody is telling there own stories here. let me tell mine. i live in Aamby Valley City, Lonavala. in the last rainy season, there was a heavy downpour for a few days here and on the road from lonavala to aamby valley just in front of INS gate, somebody had build walls on both side of road and since that was a low lying area, water couldn't escape. i was coming from pune in the morning and i saw there was atleast 3 feet water on road for 50 meters length or so. and most of the ppl were just returning back from that point. some of the vehicles had stopped just before that and watching, thinking what to do. some other tried to cross. trucks and busses had no problem but smaller 4 wheelers were struggling and some 4 wheelers had stuck in the middle, they tried to cross but half way there vehicle engine had stopped and it was water inside the 4 wheelers these include maruti vans, maruti wagon-r, swift, maruti 800, alto, and some 2 wheelers who dared to give it a try. i stood there watching but i knew i had to cross it anyhow, coz i had a meeting in office that day. i had some basic idea of offroading and how to drive in water, so i decided that i will give it a try. i put it in 1st gear and started, as i entered the water, i increased teh throttle a little bit and held constant with slightly increasing, the water was too deep and i started to think that i may not be able to cross it but then i remembered the two things that water should not enter through air filter and exhaust pressure should be maintained in such a manner that water does not enter from exhaust. i stick to basics and voila after some time i was out of water. i was so happy. i looked at other 4 wheelers stuck in the middle as they were looking at me as if thinking how is this possible that a 2 wheeler goes through and 4 wheelers are stuck. i thought in mind ----man this is pulsar....fear the black and f*** the rest. i love my bike man.

How wonderfully are we talking about bikes and scooters coming back to life after being submerged in water.

Ok, what does being submerged in water exactly means? is it to say that the steed was in water above the saddle? or was it just in water till the engine.

Ok, lets understand one thing

Petrol Engines work on electric current that is given to the spark plug through the ignition coil. spark plug has two ploes, the positive( the central electrode) and the negitive (earth) thats on the outer shell.

So as long as there is no moisture and water to let the current smoothly flow from the coil to the spark plug and head, the bike or scooter will run. (in case of water or moisture at spark plug cap or Coil, the engine stalls because of the short circuit.) But that is again given for the various other factors that the air filter does not let water in, in place of air and the fuel tank supplies fuel in place of water.

this is perhaps one of the reason why a diesel engine ca run in deep water and a petrol engine would die. Tractors and other diesel engines that are often used in such situations have the air filter, breather and the snorkel kept above, so as to let the air in.

why most of the motorcycles wade through knee deep water and a scooter dies is simply because the Coil and the spark plug of most of the bikes is way to high, where as in case of a scooter, being a forced air cooled, anytime when it enters a puddle of water, the chances are, that the water might get thrown on the cylinder head along with air by the cooling fan. Also, most of the earlier scooters had the coil way too low as compared to modern bikes or scooters.

Dont expect that any bike or petrol vehicle will run anytime there is water or moisture at the spark plug or ignition coil. If you can keep it dry and not let the water enter the carb, it will run. else..... happy towing!!

P.S: I am not a techie so dint use the technical terms and Jargons, I used the simple, common mans language, I hope I made sense.

to add to it i wanna add one more thing that when a bike is partially submerged in water, water is in direct contact with engine, so engine temperature falls rapidly, at this time time what u need is a really efficient and effective spark plug firing that can keep the fire burning inside engine. And thats when pulsar scores with its double firing DTS-i engine. obviously two spark plugs firing is definitely better than one. man it is really unstoppable.

I beg to differ on that Saaaaar! Lets not forget that no matter what, the temperature falling of the engine due to water cant be the culprit for the stalling. Lets not forget that we are talking of rain water or water from the Nallahs and not some Liquid Nitrogen that would dip down the temperature of the engine way beyond the ignition temperature of the air fuel mixture.

I hope we know that our bikes start up decently at higher altitudes at zero or sub zero temperature too.

Definitely two is better then one, but that is not the only reason why a pulsar is unstoppable....you can blame it to the poor brakes too!!
