I always use Handsfree(seriously wonder why people dont) while riding & my cell is in my jacket's inner pocket. When i get call i slow my bike & keep talking, if i know i wud be talking more longer durations then i stop it at a corner & then talk.

I use my headset too... its pretty comfortable... Only in the situations when I forget my headset at home, I switch on the loudspeaker and stick the phone in the helmet...

On my bike: I always stop (if possible) to talk on the cell-phone

In my car: Thank god for the speaker-phone .
I use a Motorola i-530. Probably the worst-looking most feature-less phone (read no camera, no color display) on the planet. But sturdy enough for military-use and the speaker-phone and voice quality on this ugly-moto is the best around. And did I mention GPS capability? . For car buffs, this is a decent phone to use.

Anyways. I find the speaker-phone a lot safer in a car. As for on a bike? don't use the cell-phone at all. Period.

There are some problems with using the handsfree kit in the helmet.

                1) If at any sort of speed the other fellow gets to hear a lot of wind noise instead of what is being said. Boom mikes do not have this problem, but as the boom gets trapped between the helmet insulation and the cheek the other guy does not hear anything until the rider starts shouting, and sometimes not even then.

                2) In most quality helmets some foam/packing has to be removed over the ear before there is room to accomodate the earpeice. If the earpeice is toucing the ear, usually sound quality is not a problem before 80 kph (that is before the helmet starts getting buffeted by the wind).

                3) Unfortunately, if one wears a towel/kercheif below the earpeice, sound is very very poor. And sometimes this is neccesary to absorb sweat in the summer, or to insulate the ears in winter.

                4) The thing is a nuisance to put on, take off. And if not fitted exactly, it leads to the baap of all earaches. At present I do not wear it for short trips for this reason - I do not take the call and back on stopping.

                5) Keep the phone in a jacket pocket/waistpouch. It wont fall. U dont need to touch it at all to answer calls and in case you have to make one, you only need to stop to initiate the call before moving on again. And numbers that you may have to call must be in the phone book, preferably the first few entries. Saves time.

I have been looking for an amplifier+speaker+mike so that the whole thing can be incorporates into the helmet, and needs to be plugged into the cell. Unfortunately I dont seem to be able to find a ready made unit. Head phone/mike combimations from a computer should provide adequate sound but will the mobile be able to power them without getting damaged? And will it actually increase the volume without any amplification? Any ideas?

@ragingbull -Which helmet available here has a built in kit? Have you tried it and checked the volume?

Well john. There is a fine for talking on a phone while driving/riding. In Mumbai, they used to take away your cell-phone which you could collect from the Police station. That was done initially when they started with their awareness campaign.

best option: don't use any phone with any accessory while riding & driving...

if u can't afford that...then look for a secluded spot & stop at that spot & do the needful...
                            simple... y take risk!

well as for me i have a nokia 6600 which i generally keep in my pants front side with the headphone wire coming from my shirt right in my ear and the helmet is on well it is comfortable since i dont ride my bike fast. When ever there is a call i dont need to pick it up it is cool to use but at the same time it is dangerous also which i know.

Well lets hope that nothing happens.
