  • My Drag Fiero

Its been 10 months since I have built this 164cc Drag Fiero and it has been evolving as usual.
Took part in 2 rounds of the Deccan Quarter Mile Drag at Hyderabad and I have won both the races in the "Above 130cc to 165cc 4-stroke" class.
I did a 16secs flat run in the first round in Jan 2009 with a set-up that I just finished 2 days before the race and with absolutely no testing and optimising.
In the Second race on Oct 4th 2009, I did a timing of a 15 secs with an exit speed of 140kph with a casual launch and shifts.
This I knew was not the actual potential of the bike and it was capable of more. The floods in Andhra Pradesh and our delay in getting to Hyd for the race - qualifying and practise, meant that I had absolutely no time to practise and set-up the bike and it was straight RACE. The engine is super sensitive to tuning and weather conditions, so was obviously running lean with the altitude difference. So decided to pit the bike for a testing session last sunday here in Bangalore and the results were very eye candy.
The other bikes that made it for testing was my friends immaculate and freshly built (with 0.25 Wiseco) RD350 HT, a 13.6 secs Drag RX(has won Speedruns previously) ridden by a 50 kilo suicide rider, a drag RX from the NMW stable and another one from another famous tuners stable.
I was the only 4-stroke fellow and my timings had impressed everyone and hence I was invited to join them.
The 2-strokes started their distint roars and i was simply mum. So it was a small warm up run and I did not join them.
Instead waited to see how they moved.
So my dear friend with his RD350 was feeling like "GOD" and wanted to prove a point with me in a Quarter mile drag and this is what happened to him. And he weights 60 kilos. Weight is a big deal is drag racing.

I beat him with almost a bike length lead at the end.
This was a run which trapped a read of 144kph on the speedgun in 400mtrs. I had the edge right from the launch till the end.
FYI, I have put on weight(now 73 kilos) and my Fiero is not very light either. It was the heaviest package of the lot, barring the 350cc twinpiper.

Next was the RX from the NMW stable and the other one. I had a good edge over them. So that was over.

The last one was the 13.6sec RX which I knew was faster than mine. However the point was to see howmuch faster he is over me. Considering, his package (bike - 65 kilos, rider - 50kilos) was lighter than mine (bike - 75kilos, me - 73 kilos), we just wanted to see the difference.
So 3 bikes lined up and we started. It was a good run, but I messed my launch looking at the signalling. Still caught up and decided to slip stream. It was a 149kph pass for him at the gun and closely followed by me with a difference of 0.8 secs.

Of the 3 RXs, 2 of them packed-up in 2 WOT runs and the 13.6sec RX was far reliable and better set-up.
I decided to do 2 more single runs to pull my best times with good launches and it was a task. Launching at high revs and keeping things under control was not easy and then it grew windy and it was getting too hot.
However stuck to my plans and did an average of 2 runs. I had clocked a best of 145kph on the speedgun in 400mtrs and did a best of 14.3 secs.
A video during warm-up of my Fiero. Note the revs. Revs till about 13000rpm.

Bravo!! But still the RD350 getting smoked is kinda.. u know. May be the guy riding the RD din't utilized it to the max. Don't know, please elaborate on what could be the reason.

P.S.: Waiting for the 260cc ZMA review.. that'd be something.

We never spare untill utilizing the last juice from our engines. We had 4 runs with the RD and the lead was similar or higher on my fiero. We captured only this run however.

                        Hey Joel,

How did you manage to reduce so much weight on your bike... Alumuninum sub frame is surely one weight reducing feature... Other than that?? Because the bike has 30kgs of weight reduced i think... Isn a stock fiero around 115-120 kgs??

I fabricated the aluminium subframe and that helped me reduce almost over 25% of the total weight of the frame. Then, a lot of sections were redone and every part in the package is weighed, machined and ensured is lighter than stock.
A stock Suzuki Fiero(drum brake) weighs 118kgs, dry. Mine is around over 40 kilos lighter, including a disc brake assembly.

The pistons are custom made. Rings are sometimes Indian or imported, based on the requirement. My Fiero runs my hand-crafted Piston which I built machining and with a lot of hand-job in about 3 days flat. In case of some really radical CC conversions, I use imported race pistons. Like my Karizma which now runs a 260cc set-up and also a big-valve layout.
                              Cylinder is crafted inhouse again.
