    Custom Digital CDI

    Hi guys, I am really excited today! I have been struggling to make a custom CDI for the past 2 weeks or so. And, today the bike finally fired.

    I will be updating details about my CDI here on this thread. Right now, the CDI is operating under static timing. I need to get the base timing right before tweaking the dynamic timings. Programming required for this is almost done. I will also add a TPS to the CDI to vary the timings under load. When the project is done, rider will be able to vary the timing in real time while the engine is running at any speed.

    I want a few help here. This will make my project that much easier to complete.

    1. How may degree before TDC is the trigger coil (pulsar coil) located. On my bike the stock timings are 10 deg BTDC at 1000 rpm and 28 deg BTDC at 3000 rpm. Is the trigger coil at 28 deg mark or more? (I do not have a strobe light, hence the question.)

    2. At what voltage does the ignition coil operate? 100V appears to be somewhat weak. Upto how much can the ignition coil tolerate? (I do not have a CRO too! )

    PS - The bike is P150 Classic.

          Great effort there.

          the ignition coil ratings can be checked in the service manual or from the OEM manufacturer spec. Im sure you can get your hands on the service manual.

            Yeah, I made the thing myself. It costs hardly 1000 bucks. About the specs, no, the service manual does not have them.

            And, it is an AC CDI. Any help to the questions there?

            Edit - You have the OEM maufacturer specs?

                Ah, cool. Finally something in the technology corner of things. I remember you talking about this a while back in the Fuel injection thread. And you finally built it.

                It would be really great to get some more details on this project of yours. I'll be following this thread closely.

                  Nah, why should I bother with epoxy. It is NOT a commercial project.
                  Right now, it has no TPS. Its at the very first stage now. All that will happen slowly as I progress. Pics will come shortly.

                    as far as i think you are using alternator,s ht current, which should be near about 300v.but i could be wrong !!
                    anything about waste spark??

                      Ah it should be. How if I tell you its only 20V or so? Go figure. This and many other problems have caused some glitches! And yeah its a waste spark system just like the original one..

                        waste spark can be removed in later stages.i was working on a msd kinda ignition . had to drop the project because of unavailability of parts.
                        what is the position of rectifier?any leaky/short diode,
                        wont it be possible to use same cdi(classic) but with variable pulse given(through an advancer unit).

                          Right now, I am using 1N5408 normal didoes, would like to use 1N4936/PR3006 fast recovery diodes. But not available here in Guwahati.

                          I have thought about that. If this project does not give spark of sufficient strength as desired, that is what I would do. But you can only delay the time that way, that is retard timing. What we need is to advance the timing. That can be done too if we send signal to the CDI depending on the trigger coil signal of the previous revolution. But, there is a chance of error in this.

                          Or maybe reposition the trigger coil further from TDC. That would mean that I need to touch the mechanicals too.

                              repositioning the coil is better idea, the coil can be positioned at the max advance and microcontroller could be programmed to delay the incoming pulse at low revs (hence easy start)and delay timing decreases as revs buildup.
