  • Petal disc vs Round disc

Can anyone tell me how do the round and petal disc differ, apart from the obvious shape? Which one is better and why?

round or petal that is none of matter i think diameter and calipers are important .correct me if i am wrong

The petal brakes reduce the unsprung weight of the bike and also provide better heat dissipation needed to maintain brake feel and responsiveness during extended heavy use..

a petal disc has more surface area for heat dissipation than that in a normal round disc of same diameter. So it increases the effeciency and life of the disc and the disc-pads.
weight of the petal disc is also less compared with a round disc..it adds to performance..
So petal discs are always better..

If you draw a complete circle and consider that a disc ok?

now start making small triangles on the circumference of the circle, ( close to the shape of the notches that are there on a petal type disc). All of that is material removed from the disc, which being of high grade steel, helps reduce the weight.

The slightest of weight reduction at the wheel, will lower the rotational momentum, ie. a wheel with a higher rotational momentum, will change direction slowly or will require more force. A wheel with a lower rotational momentum will require lesser effort, and will be more responsive in terms of handling .

Morever the notches increase the effect surface area at the rim of the disc, hence causing better heat dissipation to the air flowing over the disc.

And finally, a petal disc looks any day better than a normal disc!! lol!!

So why bajaj/hh people dont use petal discs and only TVS people do.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

If the petal disc and the normal disc are of the same diameter can they be interchanged?
What kind of modification is required when going for a larger disc (petal or whatever) ?

The mounting holes should match, also the thickness of the discs, and the petals should not touch the topside of the brake calliper from the inside.

Thanks JD. I was having a discussion at one of the FB pages and boy oh boy, the other guy was hell bent on making his point and win the argument stuck to his statement as petal disc are helpful only in supermoto or dirt bikes. Also, they are marketing gimmicks. He is also known to be a fanboy of a brand that doesn't use petal disc, so I maintained my poise and chillaxed with a buttermilk.

Can someone throw some light on the claim made by this blog post regarding petal vs round discs ?

All Tech at 1: Difference between Petal Disc Brakes and Regular Disc Brakes

In short, it is saying that petal discs have marginally less stopping power than round discs.

That's true if you look at it theoretically. Lesser surface area of the disc, hence lesser friction and lesser stopping power.
In an ideal condition that would be the case.
But then lesser friction also means lesser heat produced and hence more efficient braking over extended use.

In real life, a petal or a disc hardly makes a difference and shouldn't be a criteria to buy the bike. More important is size of the disc, the no. of calipers, and quality of calipers.
