a bike when rolls out of a factory has the shocks tuned for city riding.i mean the rear ones.this makes handeling neutral.if u stiffen the rear shocks pre load u get more load transfered to front giving sharper handeling on curves and turns on smooth roads.but on bad or uneven surfaces front end should not be stiff.so rear should not be at hard setting.i think medium pre load setting is good if u ride on a mixed surface like in most small cities.any ways only the pre load has no major effect, foreign bikes use front and rear pre load and damping settings, which helps in really fine tuning the bike as per needs..plz give ur observations and we will understand this better.

hi rajnish i have got my cbz rear shocks adjusted by 3 steps .. this does helps me take corners and sharp curves easily but my front end becomes stiff on plain roads or the handle becomes tighter to turn or control the bike.. could this be rectified ..???? my mech says 3 step turns in the rear shock is the medium pre load adjustment.. is it right ???

I think the medium setting (3rd step) is ideal. In case u know u will driving fast on smooth surface then ... there are tools available in the toolkit to change the setting.

yeah i myself change the settings now.. went to a hilly area recently on my bike and changed the shock setting to the max all 5 steps and it did wonders to the ride .. the bike was very stable at bends but back to plains i had to immdtly change it to medium coz on plains the max 5 step setting ride was horrible.

              i 'v my setting at 3..
but lifted rear shock by 1.15 inch.. with extra weiding..
it handles better at high speed ..due to forward wt. distribution.
handles better.. and brakes are supurb.. here in ktm.

adjusting rear shocks makes it hard to get a pillion seated

yup third step is medium and it is ideal setting but in mixed road conditions.for rough soft or total smooth surface hard to promote handeling.adding spacers to rear shocks is not good as it puts more load on already soft front.for really sharp handling use stiffer springs in the front tubes.

yes they have grades like engine oil.thicker oil gives more compression to forks.u need good oil seals as well for forks.

stiffer front shocks would mean better wheelies and stoppies??
