@Technician: I am not talking about duties or taxes here. Only about the homologation procedure which will make the bike street legal for our country.

People import R1s Fireblades today and pay the duty/tax and can live with it. Same cannot be done with a 600 cuz of the homologation procedure. My question was that whether this can be overcomed if a homologation has been done on that model of vehicle already!!

And when I said 'list of homoloagted vehicles', I mean the ones less than 800cc and can only be imported(not available in India by any manufacturer)!

Homologation is done so that a vehicle can be sold, so only a company who intends to sell a vehicle can get a vehicle homologate.

An individual can not do that. To asnwer your query, say Suzuki has successfully homologated its 600 (Lets assume it for now) & then you buy it from abroad as its cheaper to you. In this case would the bike be street legal? The answer is NO, because only Suzuki is authorised to sell the 600 which in all probability would have some minor changes based on ARAI guidlines, these changes would not be there on your bike.

Also if an 2000 model 600 is homologated this doesnt mean that 2009's model doesnt need to, any change is specification requires the vehicle to undergo homologation again.

This is the primary reason why bike manufacturers are not too keen in Sub 800 cc category, it would make it difficult for them to get the new models in India in time. Also to justify the expenditure on Homologation they would need to ensure that they sell good numbers which is difficult to predict for this segment.

Also legality of bike would depend upon duties & taxes which is entirely different from Homologation.

I hope this answers your query

^^^ is a good education. Thanks for sharing.

Now going back to basics, why the cut off was 800cc & not 600 or 700? I mean, on what basis the number 800 was introduced?

Why the litre classes were given the exemption, why didn't they also undergo Homologation process?

Why was Monster 696 given the exemption on Homologation?

Good Questions, even I would like to know the answers

If it was 500 we could have understood that its because of Bullet but why 800?

Btw there are other exemptions too like homolgation is supposedly waived off from cars costing $40,000 and above in their home countries.

            Must be due to M800

However Is there anyone who knows a way to get the list of bikes homologated in our country already!!??
              Little elaborate answer;
No individual can get a motorcycle/car homologated from ARAI. However if the same needs to be imported, then they need to approach the Director General of Foriegn Trade (DGFT) to pay the import duties, certfication & necessary doco works. If the category does not fall under DGFT, then one needs to approach Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) to get the import duties paid, certification & doco works including safety & emission standards.

Hope this was of little helpful.

That was some great info. Thanks Technocrat and aargee..

I think the reason they had it as 800 is to allow HD imports(which are more than 800) to our country based on some agreement on US trading front!!

Well, I don't think so because, this homologation & 800CC limits were introduced much before HD could even begin their talks with Indian Govt.

                    Found this piece of info.

"So when financially struggling Harley Davidson pleaded with India to relax its strict emission norms and lower import duties for entering the country, India struck back by demanding the lifting of the U.S. mango ban as a quid pro quo.

After a year of bickering, India agreed to change its emission rules to allow sales of motorbikes with engine capacities of over 800cc that meet Euro-III emission norms, but did not lower the import duty. The United States also agreed to import mangoes from India, provided they went through the World Health Organization-approved irradiation process and stringent packaging norms."

Have read this somewhere earlier as well!! This rule change happened in 2007 I hope..

Hi folks I am new to the forum and wondering to get the answer of the same questions repeatedly asked in this thread by my fellow brothers, to confirm the above fact I found this official press release from PMO released in 2007.

The whole idea of homologation of motorcycles in India and discouragement of our Govt to bring sub-800cc bikes leads me more confused and intriguing. Making me to do extensive research on this very inquisitive statement: Why aren't we getting 600cc bikes in India. Here what I get is the answers to all my questions:
