Nicely written article. Truly distinguishes the bike by choice from the biker who has no choice.

Beautiful and heart felt article.. Siting here I have a bright eyed smile reading this. Truly explains the sprit of biking something like the novel Johnathan Livingstone seagul. THe story of a seagul that flew for the love of flying rather than to fly to fetch food.

I'll add something that's been going around by email here in the UK among bikers. Sums things up here too! It is from a western U.S. perspective and draws on the unwarranted image that some of the media have portrayed of bikers (in the west) for the past 40 years or so. Not the happiest of pieces but worth posting, I think. It kind of unites bikers and the lifestyle and the difference we feel to the rest of society, who limit the risks they take but take risks with others' lives.

              The little "Bikers"

              i parked my bike.....
looked around me, there was no one....
my bike and me, standing in the middle of nowhere...

              i saw clouds gathering...
i saw sun going down, like way back home...

              suddenly,
              i heard noices...

i saw group of 6-8 year old kids coming in their tri-cycles and cycles...

it was a open road, that ended in the horizon...
they pointed at me yelling in their sweet voices- "Look there's a BIKER out there"...

i was a BIKER in their eyes because i was standing next to my bike, wearing leathers and my lid was at the tank....

they started "cycling" and "tri-cycling" around my bike, and they were making a bike's noise from their mouths, trying to sound like a inline 4 spinning at the redline.....

then they stopped doin it, and started to explore my bike...
one was checking the disc, other jumped on the saddle twisted the accelerator, and started to make noise again, but this time he was doin it with crouched position...

              i didn't stopped them....

now me who was the "BIKER" 10 mins before, was not the same in their eyes...
they turned one with my bike....

it was them with someone Else's bike, and they were the ROSSI's DOOHAN's,BIAGGI's.....

i thought when i left my place to ride to this place to enjoy "BIKING" and polish some more "BIKER" in me, i felt like i'm almost done....

but when i saw those kids, i thought, even after considering myself a true "BIKER" from heart and by "CHOICE", i somehow lack the passion when i saw those kids playing with my bike...

there were 6-8 of them on my bike and 2-4 just playing "GULLI DANDA" on the road...

i thought that after 10 years down the line may be 4 of them would not ever be able to buy the bike...

And the remaining 4 of them may be driving the bike, and those 4 may be the ones who are playing "GULLI DANDA" there, and the 6-8 ones on my bike wont ever see the BIKE like they are doing today leave alone the fact of going and buying it....

i jumped on my bike, strapped my helmet, told one kid to sit on my tank and other two as a pillion, and took them for the ride of their life....

I think the "BIKER" in me grown a little bit at that time.....

              Or,
i think, it just took birth......................"

                    @renny:nice one bro

coming back to the topic, everyone has problems.Family commitments, work pressure and a lot more untold may be keeping others from logging in,or just savour the good old days...After being down with a broken leg, both me and my zma(it's front was rim was badly damaged),my family pushed me to go with a car for it is safe and numerous other reasons...yet i ride today and convincing them is a daily affair.Long rides, setting some time aside just for my bike etc etc,I still do it all.Does this make me a biker?I don't know...yet,somewhere deep inside the passion glows with all it's glory...what is that biking has, that makes it such an important thing in our lives?...not all of them who own a bike can be a biker. Some people buy it just a means to commute form point A to point B.For some it's just a workhorse...countless of young men out there proclaiming to be bikers, riding fancy rides do there bit to showcase what real biking is not about. What real biking is?...that only a true biker can answer...
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch

Yes, family problems, office workload are two big obstacles we have to live with everyday. It is almost same for everyone.

Just like a scientist who overcomes those two obstacles to do his research, like a photographer to do his photography, a "motorcyclist" also overcomes those two to ride to his/her hearts content. It is always been passion for things which make people do things which one would found impossible to do otherwise. Same is for the passion of motorcyclist/biker to his bike.

A really wonderful post, I couldn't agree more.

As for me, as long as I am riding my bike, air splashing in my face, I couldn't care but to enjoy today as much as I can. That feeling overcomes any obstacles or worries and whether I am a biker or not.
With Great Power, comes Great Responsibilities .....

The self-proclaimed biker goes on with his shenanigans till his biking saga is brought to an abrupt halt by a new car (or an accident). So where is that poser biker now? Well he is no more; it was just another fleeting biker to whom a bike was a joy toy for a while. He is wiser now and has probably moved on to a car with his own alibi for not using the bike anymore.

So would you still call yourself a biker? Would you hop on your bike and ride a couple of hundred miles without reason? Would you spend a couple of hours rubbing that polish on the tank just to get that special shine? Would you respect the sanctity of the road and take care of the safety while riding? When you get older and your priorities change, would you still keep riding? Would you call yourself a biker by choice or a bike since you had no choice?
I was offered a car, a Honda City. I was tauted at due to my interest for bikes. I had an accident which broke my right arm fractured, and in immeasurable pain for 2.5 hours, before doctors sealed it off with the temporary plaster.

I never left biking though. I have my own little records. I'm probably the only person to:

                          1. painfully ride a karizma with its owner as pillion, with a steel rod in arm, before 1 month of my fracture could be completed.
                          2. take a Pulsar 180 to 131 kmph on meter, within Ajmer's City Limits.

After all those moments of pleasure and pain, Am I a biker? I don't know. What I do know is I don't want to leave biking no matter what my age or occupation be.

Let me make a small confession here.
I being new to business, started my stint as a biker and was always proud to tell people "how I am a biker".
Then changed the life and I bought my first car, spent more than 50k kms with the car in time of less than two years and then came the day. Came my Pulsar 220 and again I was back to biking.
I am ready to leave the safety of that metal cocoon at my home and go places on my 220 cc beast, dunno why but now I like the smoke filled natural air at places than the artificial cold blasts of wind coming out of those A/C vents of the car.
Am I a biker now? I returned back from a car to a bike and now planning to upgrade to a bigger bike(Not a bigger car like most of my friends have done).

BTW, hard torque is right now my favorite section on entire forum. I have been reading a hard torque or two daily since the day I joined the forum!
Helmet is meant to protect your head, not your RVM!
