  • High Temperature Paint for Exhaust

It's the monsoon and my steed has a new problem. The exhaust has lost all of its paint and the metal has started rusting really bad..I enquired about high temperature paint from a few hardware stores but they had no idea till what temperature the paint was gonna hold..so i ask you guys to help me find engine paint or high temperature paint in retail in delhi..

I'm sure this thread would solve an infinite unspoken complaints..

search for high temperature paint suppliers, there are some in delhi itself. chawri bazaar would be a good search start point, but google the dealers/suppliers before hand.

Else check up on 3M site, and see if they can arrange for some dealer to procure for you. Else you can ask them for a sample and use that.

Most of the exhausts today are either chrome plated or is powder coated.

In case if your is powder coated ( Matte or Glass finish) the stop searching for liquid or spray paints. Simply understand what is the maximum temperature your exhaust will eventually heat upto during normal running, go to any powder coating unit and tell them that you want it to be painted with a paint that has the curing temperature of around the same as the maximum heat from your engine. It is extremely simple. All you need to find is a good powder coating unit.

          all cheers

Most temperature resistant spray paints I have seen has a tolerance of 300 degree celcius or less. I wonder if that works for exhausts.

Not sure where they are available in Delhi, though.

@dcs - powder coating would not be possible since the silencer is now closed and welded with the baffle plates inside. It needs to be cleaned and sand blasted before powder coating, else that wouldve been the best way to go about it.

Other alternate is high heat paint. @bluevolt - i think it can withstand it, because brake callipers reach higher temps, than silencers.

@ JD, I would not comment on your knowledge about powder coating but would like to inform that the treatment of the part before powder coating does not involve sand Blasting at all.

It is either a Hot process, also called seven tank process or a Cold Process, also called all-in-one process, DRP by some.

The silencer can very easily be powder coated after the surface treatment by either of the process, though Hot process would be tedious but has better efficiency.

@ Thread Starter: you may try laying your hands on any good powder coating unit in your area or may contact JD or me, we both hail from same city and I guess he too knows quite a few powder coating units in the area.

Further, the lasting of the paint depends a lot on the surface treatment, and most of the paints, if applied after the right surface treatment will solve the concern

Guess that is the reason why AUDI would give a warranty for 12 years against paint and rusting- LOL

^^ from what i understood from one powder coater in sector 7 or somewhere ( near YMCA ), that he would first sand blast the components to expose the bare metal, and then the powdercoating was applied and then baked in a furnace/oven.

Chemical processes can be applied to clean the material as well, but again, if its feasible or not on a silencer, im not sure.
