  • Help needed regarding carborator and jets of pulsar 180 ug4

Hi all , this is varun from ambala i own a pulsar 180 ug4 . .it was going fine and was giving me a good top end and good acceleration . . .last week when i got a k&n air filter installed and removed the whole box of stock air filter. . .the bike gave a good pick up and the top end was nearly the same. . . .but the problem started when i read about this jetting thing on the forum and decided to go for it. . .i went to a mechanic in chandigarh and told him to upjet the carb . .but he instead of putting new jets with large size increased the size of hole of stock jets and fitted them . . .after that the bikes top end died i mean when i accelerate the bike in 5th gear above 90kph the fuel supply cuts off as if the bike is out of fule (i also noticed this problem when i accelerate in small gears ,that is at high r.p.m) . .i showed the jets to a shopkeeper he told that the jets are fine and there might be some problem with the diphagram of the carborator . .please help me i am very tensed . .please also tell me some good mechanic in ambala, chandigarh or panchkula . . . Waiting for replies

its sad that you learnt the lesson the hard way...

fitting a k&n is a lot of risk.. as they say dont fix it if it aint broke.....

actually i want you to perform a very simple task. go out on a nearby highway and run full throttle for about 10 mins and then hit the engine kill switch and simultanously pull the clutch. let the bike roll to a rest and then open the spark plug. if the colour of your plug is bone white, then you are running lean.. you will need larger size main jets..

alternatively, try switching to the old filter and notice if the problems vanish. if they do then you need a very good tuner who knows what jetting is all about.

mind you the success of k&n depends not on your spending skills but on the problem identification ability of your tuner..

if money is not a problem for you and if you can still spend about 6000 bucks, get a k&N a/f ratio meter and get it fitted to the exhaust. its very simple to use and you will get instant results...

remember, if at any point of time, you feel that the engine is not working properly, revert everything to stock and start over again

Could you please mention the jet sizes you upsized to and the size of original jets.

Well the stock jets are 112.5 and 17.5 . . .as i mentioned i think the mechanic ruined the old jets so i got it replaced at the service center. . . .i think i have to switch back to stock filter and then get my carb tuned . . . . . .no more k&n stuff . .

Try 120 jets, It should do the job. (As per I read somewhere on this forum itself.)

whenever you change anything from stock, you have to tuneup the engine properly else the consequences can be going from bad to worse.

since now you are having the filter, search for a good mechanic, get some spare time and keep experimenting with the carb, you should get it right after about 10-15 sittings....

but remember always keep a way to get back to the stock settings...
