  • Correct seating position for daily commuting...

This question might seem a little stupid.what is the correct seating position for daily commuting(Bangalore Traffic).I have been commuting by bike to college from two weeks now,i am experiencing pain in my neck and shoulder daily.(I heard sometimes it is because of wrong seating posture).i am riding discover 135 covering around 40 kms daily...please suggest what is the correct seating/riding posture....

Raikar, see to it that your shoulders and arms are relaxed. Sit as straight as possible with your lower and upper arm making a slightly obtuse angle. Do not sit back and hunch over the handlebar, keeping your arm straight and putting the weight on your wrists and shoulders.
If it still doesnt help, time to look for another bike with a more relaxed seating posture.

There is no correct position and no incorrect position.

Go for whichever position you are comfortable with.

Also, one cannot mess with the seating position(too far) because it's dependent on the bike's design.

            Help require for correct posture

Hello, I'have bought Honda shine 4 months back. It's very good bike in its segment. I'm totally satisfied with product. My daily running is 50km Recently, 15 - 20 days back I have bought new seat cover with extra padding that resulted in increase in saddle height for about 1 to 2 inches. Since then I'm feeling uncomfortable neck and upper back pain. Is this result of increase in saddle height ??? Earlier I never had any back pain issues on this bike. Shall I need to adjust handlebar position ?? Please guide.

Chances are that it is not because of the increase in height. But because of the aftermarket extra padding, which probably is too soft. The stock saddle is firm enough to provide proper support to your buttocks, while on an excessively soft saddle makes you sink in. Which is terrible for your back over long distances. If your commute was 4-5 km, then you wouldn't have noticed. The longer the time on the saddle, the more important it is to have a firm saddle in place.

Re: Correct seating position for daily commuting...

I travelled from whitefield to Electronic city for a year on my R15 V2. that is 60 Kms in a day, 5 days a week, through worst traffic you can possibly imagine.. No pain in the back, neck or shoulders. You already are on a comfortable commuter bike, if you are still getting pains, your core is weak. Changing ride will only be waste of money.

Go to a doctor, if you have a history back or neck pain in your family. If the doctor advices you not to ride, use public transport. Health comes first.

If there is no history of back pains in your family then try core strengthening exercises, they will help a lot and you will feel the difference in a few weeks. It all depends on how fit you are and how willing you are to keep yourself fit. I regularly do 5 hour long journeys on my R15V2 and it still doesn't bother me. I would be lying if I said that I don't get tired after 5 hours on the saddle, but there is no pain on my back or neck or shoulders. Get serious about your fitness and you will feel the difference.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

                  1. Get fit
                  2. Get rid of that seat cladding

Re: Correct seating position for daily commuting...

I believe this is the problem of some form of muscular imbalance. It is related to being in a seated position for extremely long time. Holding on to one position for extended periods of time will limit muscular mobility and elasticity.
