    How does a Tacho meter work??

    Hello people. A friend of mine just wanted to get a tachometer installed on his RX, this got me wondering, How does it actually work? I mean, is it direcly connected to the engine?? And the how can we figure out which tachometer to install, i mean the redline @ 8k or 9k like our 4 stroke bikes?

    P.S. Sorry mods if this has been already brought up, i didnt find any post regarding this.

      you can install the tacho from the RXZ. Its a direct mechanical linkage, though with a plastic fuse ( i.e. one of the gears is made of plastic, so in case of any issue, the gear can break or get cut, and does not damage the engine. )

      You will have to drill the clutch cover to route the cable for the tacho.

      Look at the parts catalog of a RXZ 4speed, or check out a bike if you can, it will be much easier to understand the process.

        Better you can go for an Electronic Analog Tacho, easily available in stores.

        It is very easy that you can fit it by yourself and the wire is to be connected to the main from the engine.

        I did it on my Ambition, and it works fine for the past 3 years.

        and the red line does not make any difference, the main job of a tacho is just to show the RPM of an Engine

            JD: Thats actually from a long time back. The Shogun was retro-fitted with an analog speedo and tacho a few months after its release. The tacho was electronic in the sense that it had an inductive pick-up that picked up pulses from the HT circuit. In simple terms it measures the rate at which the ignition system sends sparks to the engine. I had one mounted in my Premier Padmini too . They come either pre-set for 2-stroke/4-stroke and according to the number of cylinders in the engine.

            Here's an interesting link for a transistorized circuit for such a remote-pick up tachometer.

                @OF - i was mentioning the factory fitted tacho that comes on the RXZ. its not that simple a mod, but can be done by a good mechanic to install a tacho on a RX.

                Though interesting link there. ill look into that as well.

                  something interesting about tacho,hhmm a small query,can a shogun meter set(meter + rpm) be fixed on a rx and make it work is it possible any suggestions i dont like the shape one of the rxz it looks very big compared to that of the shogun.

                    Thank you brother JD, but i was wondering, how can i get my hands on a RXZ console, i mean this friend of mine is very particular about 'orginals'. And i'v been searching for an RXZ for the pupose, but the trouble is, they are extinct.

                      Drilling the clutch cover will not be required because the provision for tacho wire is already given in the right side casing with a plastic cover in all the rx's only tachometer gear, wire and meter console is required.

                      Try the ones from RD 350 they look good on RX 100/135.
