    Bullet break-down

    i have a '76 bullet that has been lying around for a month unused.belongs to my uncle who bought her quiet recently(read:6-7 months back).now that he has moved abroad, she happens to be our(read:me and my elder bro) responsibility.i don't really like her, blame it on the wrong-foot shifter.but my bro loves her.she used to accompany my bro for his short(5kms, to and fro) office trips until one fine day.she refused to start.figured out that the battery had to be charged.things were pretty smooth until it happened again.....and again.....and again.due to lack of time and patience my bro couldn't attend to her neither could i as i had my exams on.now that i'm free, i've been given her responsibility.

    this is my first experience with a bullet, so i need every bit of advise.figured out from a local mechanic that the battery needs to be replaced.so what battery should i go for?any particular brand/make?what else do i need to know before i wake her up from hibernation?

    please reply ASAP because my college is going to start again within a weeks time and i can't stand the sight of a magnificent machine(so what if i don't like riding her, i love her thump nevertheless) being wasted!

      I own a Bullet and my Bullet came factory equipped with Amco Battery. It hasnt given me issues till yet. You can select the type of vehicle on this website and it will give you the battery type to buy.

      Amco Batteries Limited - Home

      Standard will use AB5LB.

      NOTE: Do not buy maintenance free battery. It does not work well will Bullets, at least that is what I have heard on some forums. Good luck.

        Its a 1976 Bull !! So am sure it will have 6V electricals. You might get 6V from Exide thou not sure. But local battery makers make 8V battery specially for old Bullets which work like charm for couple of years.

        Yes never ever think of maintainence free batteries.

          can you please elaborate on that? i remember hearing on another forum that another option could be doing a 12V upgrade.how advisable is it?

          PS:try to keep your explanations as simple as possible 'coz as of now, i happen to be technically-challenged

            I am planning since a year to upgrade it to 12v but retaining the 6v considering the cost involved.

            OEM setup will cost close to 7000rs whereas outside can get it done for 4000rs (approx). Still am not confident on proceeding with setup.

              First thing you need to check is whether your bike has a 6 volt or 12 volt battery, I also recently bought an 1980s bull and got it overhauled. Thankfully the previous owner had already done the 6 volt to 12 volt transformation. This can also be true for you, so first check if you already have a 12 volt supply.

              If you have a 12 volt battery, go for either Exide or Amco, both are good. If you have a 6 volt battery, then it would be tough to find a branded one, however as Shreeni0403 has suggested, the local batteries would do.

              Unless you want to use high power bulbs and horn, you should not need to migrate from 6volt to 12 volt, its too costly.

                The battery box of your Bull looks as if it holds a 12 V battery in it.

                Just open the box and check how many caps (opening for filling distilled water) are there in the battery If you have 6 caps then yours is a 12V Battery.

                A very easy step just multiply the number of caps X 2, it gives the voltage of the Battery.

                My opinion if yours is a 12V go for AMARON they give you a 5 year warranty.

                  Somehow MF batteries doesn't last long on the Bulls. And Amaron gives 2.5 years i.e 30 months replacement warranty + 2.5 years (30 months) pro-rata buy back. Its like u buying new battery but they ll give some discount based on which month u running.

                      i'm so freaking DUMB!! my bull already has a 12V battery(it has 6 caps)! all this time my elder bro was telling me it's a 6V and i never checked.just came back from a vacation a nd the first thing i did was to check the battery.
                      now should i go for a points replacement kit or no?

                        No not needed, just start your bull with your new battery and if it takes several kicks just ask your mech to clean it and if the point has reached its end then you may go in for a change
