  • Bike gone for a toss after fitting horns, FZ-S :(

Until yesterday everything was okay, exactly one week after i got the horns fit on to my bike ! The horns costed me 230, mechanic took 150 and for the clamps, clips, switch and everything it took me 110 ! People say I got fooled by the mechanic but then I thought it was worth enough so dint comment. This morning I started off the bike honked all the way from home to college because of the traffic and few laid back rick guys but to my utter surprise the bike fuel display was gone and the bike was not starting on ignition and my bike is such that it has no kick start so I really felt doomed then and it was a lil embarassing as I had to reach the office soon since dad had called me for fixing up the laptop !

After a lot of trys to push nothing happened and I at last had to tow the bike till the local mechos place and when I reached there he opened up the side shield and found the fuse conked, he put another fuse and it conked too. Then he put some wire and recommended me to reach the SVC asap, poor thing took 20rs but after a lil ride to go get a cool drink after the towing it was again not starting on ignition ! I took it again from him and what he said he will check the wiring and when he did that he found that the horn switch wiring was not done properly and he removed the wiring and again took 20rs.

When I went to the SVC he says warranty is void, you'll have to pay money for this as these are not company fitted horns so he took 100rs took out the horns corrected the wiring and told me not to fit them ever again unless there is some good mechanic or electrician who can do that.

With so much stress, I just felt like slapping myself, I took out all my anger on the mecho and he is like not my fault if you cant take care of the bike and the company SVC guys always tell this that the way we do stuff is not right and in fact what they do is wrong ! I just ripped off the bike as I couldnt say anything !

Experts please help me, tell me how the wiring is done exactly how the switch has to be placed is the price I paid is okay ! Please throw some light as other people also may find this helpful when they fit such horns.

P.S : It is illegal if the horn is above 80 decibels I have no clue how many decibels this is thus I also want to fit a switch by which I can change between the two horns. Stock and this one in the pic below !

dude, first of all stay away from these cheap aftermarket horns..
you can opt for good brands like autopal, bosch, hella etc...

      1 more thing..
i have been a victim of fuse blowing many times as i converted my steed to full DC myself, to plonk 2 HID's.
remember whenever you do any electrical mod, and slice the wires which come out, grab a multimeter and check weather those wires are right or not.
      this helped me a lot.
it can show you weather everything is right or not, long before its late..
maybe the grade of fuse you are using must have been too low for the bike.
like when i had a 5 amp fuse, it used to blow off, whenever i used to switch on my second headlight bulb..
so i took 10 amps one and it never gave any problems.

      why are you worrying now?
finally you got the thing sorted, isn't it?
grab a GOOD quality horn which would be LEGAL too
check this out ----> Autolite (INDIA) Ltd.

and also this ----> Bosch - Horns

and this too ----> Hella India | Aftermarket

that mech must has mis-handled some wires which resulted in all these problems..

By the way, how long it has been that you bought your bike?
      how much warranty was left?
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

What about sticking to your signature?

Yamaha is very stern about its warranty issues, you can't fit any electrical accessory else your warranty stands void & with a cut in wires to fit the horn, your warranty is already null.

          Well, it is your fault.
The company is absolutely right in voiding your warranty.

And well, as for the wiring part, go and shoot the mechanic who installed the horns.

Seriously, buddy, you could have asked us at xBHP or the service center before taking such an extreme step.

@NANOtechnology : The horns you mentioned are also illegal, I guess as they are above 80 decibels !

Did he used a alternate relay with the wiring?

always keep your bike genuine and in stock condition, its easy to maintain and take care, the co is right as it is also mentioned in the owners manual any alterations will void the warranty, mechanics are not that skilled in consern with wiring of new bikes, they only know how to make money.
but a good experienced mechanic will never suggest u all this stuff(extra horns, lights and any type of alteration in the bike)any way now u got a lesson so dont finger ur bike any more and let it run stock.

@zamaan.. dude the company fitted horn in the FZ are already good enough for our Indian roads and also they are throughly checked and approved for the noise pollution norms.. but still if u need additional horn then i would suggest you to go to an authorised srvc centre and get one horn which is OE and get it fitted.. the srvc guys know their job and are well trained by YAMAHA so don't trust theses roadside mechs.. like RX88 said keep your bike stock and keep riding.

@@ zaman ...your experience has been a real eye opener for me. Even i was thinking of installing new after market horns for my bike.
Since my bike came with only a single horn, i was mulling the idea of installing a second horn from a local mechanic. But now it seems i must have a word with my SC folks.

Anyhow hope you get over the ill feelings as a lesson . To err is human....

@Zamaan: What were you thinking when the fuse was replaced with a wire? Do NOT do that ever! The fuse conks off for a reason! There was a short circuit leading to excessive current flow through the fuse which made it blow and thus save the whole wiring from damage. Whenever doing any electrical mod, use the most expensive and best quality wires and relays available in the market. Also make sure that you use sealed relays [like the ones shipped with HID kits] so that there isn't any damage caused by water.

@RX88: Man whats the fun in staying stock when you know you can extract a lot more from your bike with some mods. IMO a mod well done can perform far better than stock and also more reliable too, provided they are carried out the right way. Modding and DIY help us gain more and more knowledge about out bikes. There sure is risk, then again, even riding bikes is risky. And the experienced mech you talk about doesn't suggest mods just because he can't.
Frankly speaking, a bike without mods is just bland! But then this is just my opinion.

@RX88: Try riding the bike with that horn on an undivided national highway and see if any car/truck guy gives a shit about the puny lil FZ horn.

@deltadmz: You gotta get dual horns installed if you roll on the highways. Else single too will do. Make sure you use very high quality wires, relays and switches[if any] and tuck it away nicely from rain/ splashes of water.

In that case you gotta get dual horns. Try the Roots Windtone. Retain the stock horn and install a changeover switch so that you can honk any horn you like.
