  • Help: Bike dead, no spark. Ignition?

I have a TVS Victor. Over the last few weeks I noticed backfires from my exhaust. I ignored it for a couple of days thinking it was just bad fuel. When it continued, I looked at the spark plug and saw it was nearing it's end and I replaced it. However, backfires continued and before I had time to troubleshoot it died one fine morning.

That morning, I took the bike from it's stand and kicked, it spluttered to life for a second and died. This was normal on a cold day, I thought and kicked again, and again.. and again. I knew there was something screwed up, gave up and took the car (which is a pain in the traffic). Next day, I try starting the bike again: same. Started for a second, died and never came back.

Checked wires, looked ok. Took it to the mechanic, asked me to come back. Reports dead ignition. Recommends rewinding ignition coil.

Now my question: What do you think of this problem, and would you recommend rewinding the ignition coil as opposed to getting a new one?

Please help this poor guy, suffering from daily traffic

Hi Aargee. Thanks for the reply. Cost is a factor. I'm yet to find the price out from the TVS dealer, but I've been told by the mech. it could cost me as much as Rs850 v/s Rs150 for the rewinding.

Rewinding might solve the problem temporarily and will give up soon. Also has he cheked the CDI unit of the bike.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

Rewinding works as good as OEM if done the right way. We have numerous threads on the same topic of rewinding. the difference is that they talk about the lighting/battery charging coil rewinding.
The same procedure applies to the Ignition Coil. Just that the number of turns and the gauge of the winding wire differs. Get it rewound man! Cost effective. If this fails[which is highly unlikely] only then get the OEM coil from the TVS spares store. Also get the CDI, Capacitors, spark plug and the whole wiring of the ignition circuit checked too just to be sure.

Which one weighs more? Cost or peace of mind? If the motorcycle is not a everyday commute, then I would wait for Rs 850; if it is, then I would take Rs 850 from emergency cash.

Consider this - You spend Rs 150 now, after 2-3 months, it goes kaput again, then once again you'll need to spend. But, if the work is done in a quality way, you don't need to worry much. But it takes time to find such person as most of them are crooks trying to find short cuts with work.

I don't intend to say the genuine ones don't conk off, but, gives better life. Even if it dies in about 3-6 months, you can go back to dealer for a replacement (this ofcourse works only on rapport)

If you have a friend who also owns a Victor, simply exchange the CDI with his bike and see if it comes to life. If it does, you know the CDI's faulty, if it doesn't, then the ignition coil has a problem. Mechanics have a filthy habit of judging things without actually paying attention to all the detail..

Okay. I will take it to the Castrol Bike Zone nearby and get it checked. Will come back with details of the diagnosis. Let us see then if I can afford it. Thanks!

+1 on this.. the mechanics just try to squeeze the shit out of the people in distress.

once the mechanic replaced the whole spark plug, wire, opened up the whole ignition system, and just as i was about to get a new cdi, i realised, the ignition switch wire was short and this was causing the spark to be so weak that it would not light up the engine..

so better show it at the showroom and a couple of mechanics before you do anything.. its hectic but worth the trouble of finding yourself stranded on the middle of nowhere with the died out ignition...

According to Castrol Bikezone, there was nothing wrong with the bike. They had tested the coils and other electricals and found nothing wrong. They put everything back and the bike started. They say it could have been a loose connection. Expense : Rs150/- Squeezed for nothing. I wish I could work on my bike myself.

                        You very well can.
You just need to know how to handle basic tools like screwdrivers, spanners, multimeter [for electricals].
The key here is to remember how you pulled things apart and follow the exact opposite way to put it all back.

Good that you could get it solved without ripping and changing original parts.Learning the electrical part of your bike is simple if you take the time and interest. Most bike user manuals have the Electrical wiring diagram on the last page of the user manual.Read it carefully .

Thanks people. I'll try searching for my 6 year old manual .
While the bike has been running for the last 2 days, I'm worried about the backfires(not misfire). It is still an issue, even with the new spark plug. What might be the cause for it, any ideas?
Dirty air filter ( I clean it every 2 months), dirty carb (last cleaned 2 years back), too much carbon in the engine? My bike has done 46,800KM. Please enlighten...

Well, Castrol Bike Zone disappoints me again. My bike died the third day after getting it back from them. It just died about a kilometre from my office and I had to push it back (uphill).

Called a local mech near Madhapur (Hyd) and he told me it is some coil and he got it out. It was connected to a transformer like device (CDI?) and its tail was connected to the spark plug . I told him I'll get a new one and ask him to fit it back.

Guys, can you let me know which coil that is in the attachment and how do I test it if it works?
