  • Village mech put grease on my disc!

A village mech tried to make some squeal in my brakes go away by putting grease on my disc (happened too quickly for me to stop him). I have tried wiping it off but my stopping distance has increased nonetheless. What can I do to un-f*** my brakes?

Try soap water or degreaser (such as OKS). As you use the brakes they may bite good soon. If the problems still persists, change the pads.

really funny... seriously GREASE on DISCS !!
As Ravi said, mild soap should remove the grease. Clean it thoroughly, preferably yourself (not THAT mechanic again!! ). Run the bike after that & keep on working with the brakes as when it becomes hot, the water will evaporate.

Next time, clean your disc with mild soap solution & then wipe it dry with good cloth. If it still persists, its time to change the pads.

        But GREASE !!!

          hahaha!!!

getting the grease off the disc is prolly the easy part.
pressure wash calipers and disc assembly.

remove brake pads from caliper and scrub.
u mite have to replace them.

Best option, you never know where a bit of grease might be in hiding and may ooze down due to heat on to the plate again...

Try cleaning it with soap water and or a lil vinegar mix...

@Samarth - Nothing to worry; wash the disc using any soaps that're used for washing dishes like Vim/Pril etc. So the disc becomes bang clean.

Next, the pads - you may want to experiement using the same. If it doesn't work, then simply replace the pads.

Edit - Neil just reminded me of one more thing - Use the great WD40 or Zorrik. For sure the grease disappears.

Motul does have a disc clean spray that has come out in the market recently ~ 400 bucks. You could try that as well.

The disc can be cleaned easily. The only problem is with pads. I guess soap water will do the trick. Remove the pads, soak them in soap water and apply sand paper. Use the brakes for good amount of time to dry them. 99% this would work; If still the problem persists, change the pads.

Before I give my bike for a wash, I would spray OKS degreaser in to the pads and chain. Wait for 10 min and then pressure wash it. Braking will not be perfect initially but as you start using the brakes, slowly the braking will come back to normal.

cant believe that your mech did the same thing what i did to my disc brakes. i had applied oil .

dont panic, Get the disc removed from the wheel and first clean it with lots of any local dish wash bar. The reason why i am saying local is that it does not have any moisturisers. do tha saem with your pads and dip them overnite in the solution. this will help a lot.

If this does not help, use this as the last alternative.
dip the disc in kerosene. and keep overnite. but simply replace the pads

                      Very simple thing.
Buy half litre NC Thinner/paint thinner for Rs.50
take 12 number ring spanner, remove the pads, clean them using thinner and toothbrush, apply sandpaper 220grit, again clean with thinner.
clean the disc including the holes with the thinner.
This is how I clean my disc brake and pads.
After cleaning, the brake will regain efficiency after you ride for 10kms applying brakes.

I thoroughly washed the brakes with water (no soap) and removed the grease caught between the cross drills with a stalk. Then I dried them thoroughly and braked hard for a while to get it to dry. Seems to have solved about 70% of the problem but there is still some stiffness, which I'm prepared to live with until next service where I'll get them to replace my pads or clean them. I don't want to risk disassembling anything around the caliper myself. But thanks all for your input... it really helped.

@Samarth - nothing to remove buddy; just use Zorrik or WD40 (costs around Rs 60 for 80 ml) & simply spray it right across greasy places on the plates & pads. Nothing to wipe either & you'll get in TOP NOTCH condition.
