  • Advice needed on P220S !!

    hello Xbhpians,
I am staying in Bangalore. I'm a total noob in bikes.I'm planning to buy my 1st bike which is an Pulsar 220-S.I have lot of Questions in mind .Hope you'll help me out by clarifying my doubts.
1> I heard that P220 have to be booked in the probiking showroom only. Is't true ? The Probiking showroom , do they offer only booking or do they offer service too ?
2>What are the things i have to check thew bike for, at the time of delivery ??(i mean the things i have to cautionally look for )
3>I have heard that I shouldn't rip the bike off for the 1st 1000kms. What is the speed i have to maintain ? any other things as such i need to know ?
4Is there any thing like, i should shift the particular gear at the specifc speed initially til the completion of 1000kms ??

    Thanks in advance

To answer your queries: 1) Yes the Pulsar 220 & the Ninja's have to booked in the Probiking showrooms only. Usually a dealer who runs the Probiking showroom, also has a normal Bajaj showroom & service center as well. 2) Make sure that the Mfg. date of the engine is around 1 month before your delivery date. Also check the chassis number. Make sure there are no loose parts & vibrations when you start the bike. 3) Details of the bike's run-in procedure will be given in the user manual. Here they are as given in the user manual: Kms. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th (gears) 0 - 1000 15 30 45 55 65 1000 - 2000 20 40 55 65 75 It is suggested not to go over 4000 rpm during run-in. Hope all your doubts are clarified. BTW I own a 1 month old Pulsar 220F DTSi.

          Hey

          1. P220s is a good choice, yes you have to buy it from probiking showroom only.Khivraj is a trusted name. you have their showrooms in Indiranagar, kasturba road (next to mg road), Horamavu. These are the places I've heard of where they sell p220. khivraj has it's own service centers some say it's bad, so far I've had no issues with their work.

2.The person who delivers the bike will check the lights, indicators, horn, starter, coolant tank is filled, check the odo it should not have run more than 10km, don't accept a bike which has been used for by pbk mechanics, they always rip the bike. just be with the person and check if all is well. it's also good to opt for teflon coating.

3.top speed for first 1000km should be within 60kph and till 2000km it should be within 70kph. when the bike is new don't ride it at 60 for long periods, just a short burst is fine.

          4. don't cross 4000 rpm in any gear till 1000km and don't cross 5000rpm in any gear till 2000km.

ps: if you're ready to buy the bike I'd suggest you hold on for 2-3 more months, there are lots of rumor's that pulsar 220dtsi and other smaller pulsars will be released with four valves (like p135) which means more power, better mileage. But it's your call.

Don't just rely on the checks performed by the person delivering the bike. Do the checks yourself as well. The PBK guy may look irritated or even angry that you don't trust him to do that but you are paying ~80,000/- of your hard earned money for the bike so you have all the rights to check it yourself. I think there is a thread somewhere that tells you the things to check.

The user manual mentions that you should not rip the bike above 4000 rpm for the 1st 1000kms & 5000 rpm for the next 1000kms. Also it is suggested that during the 2nd 1000kms, you ride it at short bursts of higher speed. It doesn't mention any speed limit.

            4. don't cross 4000 rpm in any gear till 1000km and don't cross 5000rpm in any gear till 2000km.

            Very true.

Regarding this I would say that if you want to buy a bike, don't wait for new launches as if you wait for an upgrade, there will be another better bike or upgrade coming up every 6-8 months. There were rumors since the time the 220 was launched for the 1st time (DTSFi) that a Pulsar 300 is in the pipeline. So don't rely on rumors & go for the purchase.

            The answers are in bold...

1.The user manual for p220f says that from 0-1000km speed should not exceed 65kph in top gear and from 1000-2000km speed should not exceed 75kph. Basically meaning you shouldn't revv the bike over 4-5k rpm. what holds good for 220f should hold good for 220s.

              2. I don't think pbk will try to push a damaged vehicle. it will suffice if you stand with the showroom mechanic when he tests the electricals and checks for brake fluid etc etc. Need not act paranoid and start checking the horn and lights in the office itself.

              3. If I buy a bike and one month later I come to know that for just a few thousand more I could have bought a newer model I'd be kicking myself. On those lines I said it would be good to wait till january. Ultimately it's the individuals discretion when to buy and what to buy. we can just suggest.

Exactly. So we can just deduce the speed as the manual just mentions the rpm's.

I've had a couple of friends accept delivery of a 220F with the indicators not working here. Thats the reason I suggested the checks. Its a pain to go to the showroom to rectify it.

My point is that a new bike is always going to be launched every 2-3 months. So no matter how long you wait, you'll still be kicking yourself!
eg. I bought a Kinetic Nova in 2002 & the Nova 135 was launched in 2 months. Then I bought the 180 UG3 in 2006, the 200 & 220 were launched within 1 month. So am speaking from experience.
