  • [Help]: To keep or to let it go?

    Dear Folks,

Need some help in clearing my confusion

Here is my dilemma and seeking opinions of the knowledgeble community here.

I own a November 2000 HH CBZ besides a ZMR and a Swift. With the latter two options, it is no longer my daily commute and I do not get to ride it that often either due to lack of time. As a result its condition has deteriorated a bit and it's lying stationery in my parking most of the time.

So for the last few days, I've been contemplating two options, either restore it completely or just sell it off.

I used my CBZ like a normal user and kept it in immaculate condition when it was my regular commute. Since it is my first bike and it has been with me for almost a decade now, it's a bit hard for me emotionally to let it go.

Since the bike has been discontinued long ago, would spare parts availability be a problem if I decide to go ahead & restore it ? Or should I just go ahead and sell it off ?

    Looking forward to some inputs.

I have recently done complete engine work on my 23 yrs old KB 100.So parts for a 10 yr old bike shouldn't be a problem. To keep it or not is a Personal Decision....and depends entirely on your will.

I would say keep it its a beautiful bike which started the 150 class and above revolution in India. Even though it is not a great performer like some of the performance bikes available today, i feel it has an x-factor to it. I still have mine which is a 2001 model with some modifications.

Haven't you got a younger cousin/sibling whom you can gift it to. Atleast you can keep an eye on it. I guess first bikes are pretty sentimental, can't seem to let go of mine as well, though I do need a bigger and more comfortable ride. Spare parts should not be a problem since the bike was only discontinued around 4-5 yrs. ago. So, restoring it and keeping it should not be a problem at all.

Appreciate your inputs guys..unfortunately I do not have a younger sibling whom I can gift the bike. After thinking for two days, I've decided to keep the bike as its too difficult for me to let it go. So now its about restoration and how do I start with it.

My bike has covered almost 52k kms so as far as the engine is concerned, what would be the parts which would need overhaul/replacement ? Any suggestions here for performance upgrade as I've been running it in stock condition all these years.

Paint - The bike needs a new paint job and same stickering as it was originally.
Brakes - Disc pads and rear brake shoes need to be replaced.
Suspension - Stock one, too stiff and hard. Any suggestions here ?

              Any other suggestions ?

As far as performance upgrades are concerned, there are loads you can do.
K&N alongwith upjetting, free-flow exhaust, Iridium spark plug, etc.

Paint job needs a experience fellow cos its the 1st thing that catches the eye.
Brembo has started production in India under the name "Bybre" in a plant in Chakan, Pune. You can go in for those. The latest Pulsar's have these brake assemblies.
Regarding the suspension, you can go for a mono-shock, borrowing from the Unicorn. Again this is a highly skilled mod job as 1 incorrect/weak weld can cause collapse of the rear end.

I was in the same dilemma. I have a 92'model CD 100 still in stock condition, immaculate actually. A kinetic honda ZX 95 model. Since my 220 came into the picture, i have had numerous thoughts of selling the 100cc bikes. but i decided to buff them up, and keep them for show(of course hidden)

We have a guy named Surojit here in Pune who uses a CBZ 2000 edition as his daily ride and touring bike. The bike has done 1,10,000+ km with no engine work. (Still does 110 on speedo and returns 40 to a litre) This probably means that your bike too wont need any work for quite a long time.

What this also means is restoration wont be such a pain as you think it may be.

BUT (and this is really a *****...)

Since you dont use it at all, why spend the time and effort to restore it?

I got the P 220 a year back and was faced with a similar situation with my old bike (The Caliber 115) I let it go with a heavy heart eventually and even though I missed it early on, the fact that I had my new ride quickly helped me forget.

Hey, I am not Surojit, let me clear that first.
I had the same dilemma with my 2004 Fiero F2 when I bought my R15 in 2008.
I learnt that the engine is in immaculate condition, but the front suspension, disc, battery&paint all needed an overhaul.
Did it up slowly&steadily. I still enjoy riding this bike almost daily&my mother loves to go for shopping with me on it.
Now it has also reached 53K kms.&I am seeing small signs of engine oil leakage in the gasket area. The tyres need replacement, but the engine is still good.
I am talking about the same genre of 150s that we have. Actually I wanted a CBZ but ended up with an F2.
However, these are real good bikes (yours is a Honda engine that can last longer)&will not fetch a good resale value if sold.
So why not keep it? You can use it for running errands atleast, or sometimes when you don't wanna park your ZMR in a crowded marketplace etc.!
My advice would be-1st get its engine health checked. Be prepared for 5-6K investment&it will surely run smoothly for some more years. Spares will not be a problem as you have seen above.
                      All the best!
