    Frequent Engine Oil Level Drop - P220 Fi

    My bike has clocked 35k+ kms and 3 yr old. Lately i'hv been observing frequent oil level drop in my bike ... Had to refill about 300ml per 1000 km since last few thousand kms . I'hv always used Motul 300V since bike was 4k kms old .
    What could be the reason ? I guess pistone rings need replacement . If in case any engine part need to be replaced , will it be covered under warranty (5yr warranty on engine)?

      Yes , fried piston rings will be replaced under warranty. Check the cylinder head gaskets for seepage, and also gaskets in other parts of the engine. Whats the grade of oil that motul 300 has ? HAve u seen the condition of oil when drained ? if its thick black, then oil is entering into the combustion chamber. check ur exhaust for oily residue. exhaust head too..

        +1 Do as he said. All the parts will be covered under warranty only and only if you have done all the services in time.

            The oil drinking is because of 300v synthetic oil. Most of the P220s with extended usage of 300v would display this.

              @Abhi: As a first step get the piston rings replaced, whilst replacement check the cylinder walls if there is scoring.

              At 30K usually replacing the piston rings should solve your problem. If it still does not work, then you might be heading for a cylinder block-piston kit replacement. This is covered under warranty though!

              Btw, if the piston ring replacement works. Then you need change your rings again at 60K or after about 30K kms.

              Piston Rings are *not* covered under the engine warranty.

              Not really. I've run 7.9K kms on 300v with a Ladakh ride thrown in between. The oil level dropped only by about 100ml.

              300V when used initially, eats up the gaskets. This can be fixed be replacing the gaskets.

                Are you sure about this? I dont think pistons rings will be covered under warranty.

                Can someone point me out as to where the 5 year warranty is mentioned for the engine?

                  Put the bike on center stand. Start the bike in neutral gear and revv the engine at 6-7k rpm. If you see white smoke from the silencer, that means engine oil is getting into the combustion chamber and pistons rings need to be changed.

                  Also, on a not-very-hot silencer, use your fingers to see if the exhaust tip is oily. If it is oily, that also means you need to get piston rings changed.

                    There is no oil leakage through the cylinder head gasket and others...
                    300V i'm using is 15W20 ...
                    Looking from the window , oil indeed looks thick black ...
                    I checked silencer end for any oil residue , but theres only carbon . its not sticky ! Will check the head and revert ...
                    Till date bike's tappets / timing chain is not adjusted

                    BTW I'hv lost the track of servicing , but I have the bills ...

                    Not really. I've run 7.9K kms on 300v with a Ladakh ride thrown in between. The oil level dropped only by about 100ml.

                    300V when used initially, eats up the gaskets. This can be fixed be replacing the gaskets.
                    Any Idea how much piston ring replacement will cost ??
                    I'm using Sirac and FZ's front ... acc'n is reduced a bit but top end has not increased ! Still it touch 140 only

                    I checked the exhaust tip for any oil , but there is only carbon , no residue of oil. Its not sticky . Will check for smoke tomorrow n revert back .

                      there's ur answer to the problem. Kindly change the oil once every 2.5k to 3k kms .. i dont think oil will stay in the engine for so long without getting eaten up.

                        Using a 15W20 in Indian Climate on an air cooled bike (Yes it does have an oil cooler but so what!!!)..You have charred and scarred your cylinder walls..Luckily you can get a warranty claim by just saying that ur bike's consuming engine oil and you would get a complete engine overhaul..Next time onwards, read a little more about engine oil grades before experimenting (No offence!!)

                          ^ Never heard of a 15W20 300V oil, it must be a typo and the oil is probably the 15W50 variety.

                            5K is what the 300v usually lasts without a topup. It would last a bit longer if your bike is running colder climate or if you are sedate rider.

                            Piston rings cost about 200-300 bux, and the labour charge to replace them would be another 200-300 bux. I don't remember the actuals.

                            Top speed is dependent on too many things, but yes with Sirac the P220 Fi can hit a speedo indicated 146 with the stock front tyre. With any other front tyre you need to factor in the speedo error induced. For eg: With my IRC Wildflare front tyre the speedo under reads by about 2-3 Kmph. Max I've done is 143 on the speedo, so thats about 145 on the speedo with the stock tyres.

                              Well neither white/blue smoke is coming from silencer nor there is leakage from gaskets . I guess i'll try another 5k kms . Any idea about alternative to 300V ?? Its price is increasing like gold !

                              Maybe there is speedo underead then , because of Zapper FX on front .
