  • Oil level drop after a tour? P180 UG4..

    Hello,

Recently I did a tour of 1300kms on my Pulsar 180 UG4 (which has done 14000kms). When I came back and changed oil only 850ml was left in engine. I mean the 150ml of the oil was burnt? (I will clear the fact that, while changing oil, I almost left the oil draining nut opened for 5 hours, so it could'nt happen that there was some oil (150ml) still left in engine, as I tried every method to drain the whole oil for e.g. tilting the bike fully etc...)

I completed my run-in as per manual and also there was no oil level drop before this trip, then, why after the trip the oil level dropped. Is it due to hot temperature and me riding at 90-100kmph with pillion continuously for 600kms with only 2-3 breaks?

    Help Me!

    Thanks.

      Update:

There is no smoke (of any kind) from exhaust, confirmed this from 5 different mechanics and my most trusted one. He says nothing is wrong with the bike. Then, Did the oil evaporated on its own? But, how? As there was no overheating signs from the engine, I could almost touch it for 1.5-2 seconds even after continuous triple digits for 150-200kms.

I think it can. Even if your piston rings are fine and even if your bike doesn't emit any smoke the oil level drops with usage. This happened last week with my pulsar too. I drained the oil and it was close to 900ml. I immediately filled in new oil and took it to my trusted and experienced mechanic. he said it is normal. I insisted on opening up the block and inspecting it. he said that I am crazy. He instead did a compression test and the reading came to 9kg/cm2 which indicates everything is fine inside the bore. Checked for oil leaks. None found. So I guess it is normal.

Itz completely normal.Earlier i had P150 and always worried about the oil decrease, the svc engineer told me that it was normal. If u dig up the P220 ownership thread someone has point out the technical reason for it

Could you refer me to the page where this problem was briefly discussed on the 220 thread?

Sorry abhi for hijacking your thread, but my question is related.

                I have a pulsar 180 UG2.
Q1)I wanted to know whether checking of engine oil level needs to be done by screwing in the dipstick completely or without screwing it in?

Also I bought my bike second hand so dont know about its previous history.
Q2) If it was rebored, its displacement will increase, will that need more engine oil to be put into the crankcase?

Q3)Will reboring affect the engine oil level reading? i.e. even though I put 1 ltr will the reading be below the min mark because of the increased engine displacement ?

@abhichotu.abhi: Pulsars are prone to drinking oil mysteriously when driven for longer periods and / or high speeds. its quite normal for a pulsar, although it shouldn't happen.

                  pulsar engine behaves that way.

                  my pulsar does the same.

the problem will grow as it becomes older.

                    1) NO! Donot screw it. Just dip it and remove, that will tell the actual oil level. Be sure that the bike is standing on main-stand and on a leveled surface.

                    2) and 3) are better left for experts.

:O Thanks! I did'nt knew it. I also came to know that oil evaporation also happens, and there is a particular amount of maximum oil evaporation for every oil. Mine is API-SM and for it the evaporation should be maximum 15%. Now, from this I came to conclusion that oil should be allowed to cool down in long trips.

                    Thanks for that information again.

IMO and AFAIK oil doesn't evaporate, it burns (or there's a leak). All combustion engines burn a small amount of oil, it's normal, and often car manufacturers give guidelines as to how much burning oil is normal per x amount of miles. Normal oil consumption rating means you will burn a little bit of oil which will not be noticed. If you can see a blue trail behind you then you are burning too much oil for sure.

There is a certain amount of oil that evaporates, and it depends on different API ratings of the oil. For API-SM there is 15% allowance for evaporation. You can read the API ratings in wiki.

Indeed you are right. I always thought that oil in high temperatures burns full stop, and then leaves nasty residues, but they say it also boils off, or rather its lighter molecules do. That is very interesting, thanks for the info...

^^^ I donot claim, but there is always possibility that when a air-cooled engine ridden at 100-110kmph continuously without breaks for 150-200kms with a pillion, it takes toll on something. That's oil in my case. Also, I would like to tell that the oil was already 1000kms old when I started the tour.
