  • Fuel supply problem!

    Hi guys,

My friend owns a Karizma R which is just two months old....He has a strange problem....whenever his bike lowers into reserve .....the engine turns off suddenly inspite a full 1.5liters still left over(its visible when tank lid is open)....But, when ever he refuels it above the reserve mark...it starts without any hesitation?.....Could anyone please suggest what would be the problem and its solution??.....Does Karizma doesnt run till the last drop of its petrol?.......

Its not recommended to run the bike till the last reserve of fuel. And read the owners manual, it will specify the amount of fuel that will be present in the bike, but will still be unused.

If its above that limit, than there is something wrong with the petrol tap on the bike, that its not working properly in reserve, and needs to be checked/cleaned. Get that checked first.

what you said is totally correct...but, as per practicality every bike should run till the last drop of petrol right!........anyways Thanks for the Reply!

@FZLad: we expect every bike to run till the last drop of fuel (well almost till then)...but the reality lies on how manufacturer is designing the fuel supply to the carbu...if the fuel pipe has got a dipping rod with 2 small holes, one for "ON" situation & one for "Reserve"...then depending on the holes placement, the oil be used up...for FI engines there's always some unusable reserve in the fuel tank...so, it's actually not possible to consume all the fuel...

Nope, as per design of the tank, and the fuel tap, and the fuel pump ( in the case of the ZMR ), there is always a quantity of unusable fuel.

This is because the dirt, dust, muck, water and other contaminants over a period of time, when your bike is parked, settle at the bottom. Now if the fuel was collected from the absolute bottom of the bike ( for the sake of practicality as you say, to run till the last drop ), all these contaminants would enter the engine, choke the carburetor/fuel injector, create dirty deposits, and reduce the efficiency and power output of the engine. Also it would require more frequent servicing of the injector/carburetor, and the fuel filter.

Also in the case of a fuel pump, it will cause it to clog/choke and get damaged.

I have seen a number of R15s getting spoiled this ways ( young boys, wont spend too much on fuel, and will constantly run bike on reserve quota ). The fuel pump gets clogged.

Ideal scenario is to run bike on atleast half tank whenever possible, and use the last bits for when going on touring/long distance riding, where range is important.

Is there any other way to prevent this apart from maintaining half a tank of fuel. Answer me in the case of ZMR. Is it necessary to maintain half a tank in FI motorcycles?
