I have a Unicorn special edition. I am a decent rider and do not unnecesarily accelerate nmy bike. My usual driving speed is around 55-60km. For some strnage reason my Unicorn is giving me an average of around 40kmpl. If i speed-drive at around 70-80kmpl, my average drops to 35kmpl. Can someone suggest/advise why i get such low average and what should be done to improve average to atleast 50kmpl.

What's the ODO on your Uni? What was the ODO reading when you serviced last time? Do you experience any starting trouble & what's the color of your spark plug? Do post a pic of your spark plug here.Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

@majestic : before u post a problem kindly do put up the service history of ur bike. It would help us to suggest or advice or even comment.
Do a carburetor overhaul.
check the tire pressures.
make sure ur chain is lubricated adequately.
does ur bike tend to pull to one side when u take ur hands of the handle bar ?
Check for wheel alignment.
Ask if honda will blow pressurised air and clean the exhaust.
check ur spark plugs.
most of all, check if the disk brakes are constantly rubbing against the disc. (put bike on centre stand and rotate the wheels. it should rotate freely).check rear drum brakes also.My BiKe DoEsN't LeAk OiL, iT mArK's ItS TeRriToRy !

Dipesh, Welcome to Xbhp forum. Kindly post your introduction in Who are you section of this forum to know about you. With regards to your problem. Apart from pointers given by others, quality of petrol also affect the FE. Avoid fueling from non-reputed bunks.Originally posted by majesticdipesh View PostDear fellow X-bhp-ians,

hello everyone,
even i am facing the same problem these days. Its been more than 3 and ahalf years since i bought my unicorn. It never gave me any mileage issues. The mileage varied between 52-54 kmpl. But since the last 6-7 months, it has dropped to about 35-10 kmpl. Got the bike checked at the service station. They did their job but still for the sake of my own satisfaction, it got it tested again in front of them. Burnt the complete fuel in the carburetor and then tested the mileage. It came out to be a whooping 56. But again on road, its giving something about 40. Have done almost all the checks mentioned above but there's still no improvement.
Need help. Please suggest!Tarun Vaish

^ there are lot of issue contributing/affecting mileage.
You'll need to check the brake shoes if it is getting rubbed. Check wheel bearings of any wear and tear. Your tyre pressure riding style etc.
Most importantly even the quality of fuel does matter a lot for better performance/mileage.RX100 1996 | Karizma 2004 | Karizma-R 2011 | RXZ 1999 | RX 135 1998 | RX 100 1993 | CBF150 2005 - 2011

Thanks for the suggestions!
I've done all the checks as you have mentioned. The front brake was giving a few problems i suppose but I've got it fixed. But there's still not much of improvement..Tarun Vaish

hi,im satya i do hav unicorn 3rd generation which clocked around 34,000 kms in odo.my horse gives me around 59kmpl in city and around 68-72 kmpl on the high way. this happens only to my bike as it is a machine of a automobile engineer(me). forgetting about all those petrol quality, brakes friction, riding condition, etc etc...1st check whether ur engine is really capable of delivering such mileage.its not a big deal checking that here are the few tips to find it out 1.give a slight sudden throttle,it shud response quickly and come back to idling state as early as possible.(IT DEPENDS UPON GOOD CARB TUNING) 2.and check the idling by seeing the tachometer,it should be steady and not fluctuatingand shud be around 1000rpm.this rpm shud not go high when the engine is hot. 3. and finally any air leaks in the engine valves, this can be checked by lowing down the engine rpm to a very low stage and be care tht it shud not get turned off.if the engine does not gets off at ver low rpm thn it means tht ur valves are good. check these things and reply me with ur odo reading and number turns of the fuel screw of ur carb.i wil get u rid of this prblm.its not a big deal in solving tht.

Re: mileage problem with UNICORN
I have the same mileage problem. My tacho rises when engine gets hot. This used to happen a lot earlier(went upto 2-2.5k). I told the mechanic about it. He did some adjustments, after that the fluctuation is not that much, but it still increases.Originally posted by satya ae View Posthi,im satya i do hav unicorn 3rd generation which clocked around 34,000 kms in odo.my horse gives me around 59kmpl in city and around 68-72 kmpl on the high way. this happens only to my bike as it is a machine of a automobile engineer(me). forgetting about all those petrol quality, brakes friction, riding condition, etc etc...1st check whether ur engine is really capable of delivering such mileage.its not a big deal checking that here are the few tips to find it out 1.give a slight sudden throttle,it shud response quickly and come back to idling state as early as possible.(IT DEPENDS UPON GOOD CARB TUNING) 2.and check the idling by seeing the tachometer,it should be steady and not fluctuatingand shud be around 1000rpm.this rpm shud not go high when the engine is hot. 3. and finally any air leaks in the engine valves, this can be checked by lowing down the engine rpm to a very low stage and be care tht it shud not get turned off.if the engine does not gets off at ver low rpm thn it means tht ur valves are good. check these things and reply me with ur odo reading and number turns of the fuel screw of ur carb.i wil get u rid of this prblm.its not a big deal in solving tht.
Also, for the air leak suggestion that you gave, ideally how low should the rpm be before the engine shuts off?
