  • Rx100 does not idle

    Hi,

I have a 1987 Yamaha RX100. For the past few days the bike does not idle. I have to hold the throttle at mid-range. I cleant the carb, spark plug, fuel level, spark wire, spark plug but to no avail.

        1. Did you or someone try something with the generator? Atleast cleaning?
        2. How abou the reed valves? Is that cleaned too; check if it needs a replacement
        3. What's the position of needle in the carb? It has 5 positions; pls check & post as what position it is set currently. Is it 1 from top or 5 from bottom?
        4. Check if the airscrew is not damaged
        5. Check if there's a free fuel flow from the fuel tank through the fuel tap

            Thank you for the reply.

Could you please throw more light on the reed valves (where is it located, what to look for, possibility of repair instead of replace, how and what parts to replace, etc)?

I have given a screenshot of the reedvalve. It is located between the bore and carb.

I would not advise you to repair the reedvalve as it is very delicate and might get damaged if tampered.

Yes, but what is the inspection method?

Well, if you haven't replaced this for years together, simply replace it with a new one. If this is bought in a time frame of 2-3 years, then let it stay where it is.

What about my other points? Would like to see answers on other points too.

the easy inspection method is to keep the big end of reed valve at your mouth and try and suck in air, it should not let any come inside, and when you blow hard, it should make a sound like a reed organ ( not necessary though ).

Did you like wash your RX in the last few days? Did the problem crop up after the wash? If answer to these 2 questions is yes I want you to pop the spark plug out and strike it's head against the palm of your hand. If you see little beads of water on your hand you sire have located the culprit. Now all you have to do is locate where the water is latched and PROFIT!!! In my case the water was latched in the air filter element. Try this before you jump on the reed valve. These are my 2 cents then again I could be wrong and the problem might be the reed valve

No its not the washing problem. The ignition coil is dry. Let me rephrase the problem:

Bike starts but does not sustain. I need to hold the throttle at mid-high range. Even then its not at a certain rpm, but very unpredictable. Engine rpm sometimes shoots way up or way low. If it goes low, it just stalls.

To me it really seems like a reed valve problem. I will be opening the reed valve this weekend. Just need very good tips of what I need to look for, etc.

@Gordon - Follow what JD said on checking reed valves. Also check for the needle's position, it should ideally be at middle or 3rd stage.

Did the RX come with a powerbox?? ( the YEIS system ) If yes, it could be a cracked hose, or a leaking powerbox as well.
