  • Regarding stator coil rewinding in pune

My bike TVS Victor GLX 125
I want to support high wattage bulb of 60/55 watts and I dont prefer HID because it is a nuiscance for oncoming traffic hence I want to go only for 60/55 watts bulb.
I also tried fitting 60/55 watts bulb and at high engine rpm,the bulb shines bright and its beam focus is good but at lower rpms less than 3000,the illumination is very dim and lower than the earlier 35 watts bulb.It is almost like driving in dark on highways and hence unnecessarily,I have to keep engine running at high rpm which is affecting mileage.

I tried to search for people doing coil rewinding jobs in pune but from 6 months,I am not able to find anyone of them in Pune.
Through one mechanic,I tried fitting a bajaj scooter regulator to the headlight wires. The situation has improved a little bit but not satisfactory.Above 3000 rpm, focus is good like cars HL beam but again below 3000 rpm,the headlight beam is like a 35 watts bulb.
I need a help regarding this

TVS Victor GLX has got Magneto of 90 Watts out of which 50 watts are for lighting according to Master Ignition Limited who are the OEM supplier for TVS.

    1) In pune, does anybody do the coil rewinding job?if yes,can I know anyone of them and any details about them.Everyone is suggesting to go for new stator coil and TVS dont sell only stator coil. They sell whole magneto assembly for 2200 rupees.I just need some 10 to 15 watts extra since TVS coil has 50 watts for lighting.
    2) secondly I have heard that Avenger coil supports 60/55 watts bulb but I dont know whether Avenger stator coil will directly fit in Victor GLX.I am thinking to try this option if no one from pune does coil rewinding job but not sure whether Avy coil will fit in or not.
    3) My battery is of 2.5 AH .Can I fit a battery of 4 AH/5 AH because I think that my magneto is of 90 watts hence charging a slight big battery wont be a problem. Some mechanic told me that if I fit a 5 AH battery,my bike's wires and electricals will melt.Is it true?

I am desperately looking for a person doing stator coil rewinding in or around pune.

    Thanks in Advance

Pankaj, sry I just had to interrupt in this thread, though my replies may not be helpful to you. But my main intention is to state that you've done an excellent homework, very good & deserving appreciation. Not many people do this (include me too ). Good homework you've done.

Your point is valid that just for 10-15 additional, you're spending 2.2K; just remember that the winding should be done properly otherwise your existing setup goes kaput.

Yes it is; but how about RTR's coils? I assume they should've 60/55, you may want to verify that. I'm suggesting RTR's because, all stables are from TVS & it should be easy for you to verify.

If you're still convinced on Avy's coils, what you need to do is, take the Victor's stator plate, approach a PBK & just compare Avy's stator with it. Even if it matches, ensure that the output from ignition coil of Avy matches to Victor, which is very important, otherwise you'll loose your CDI's often. Again, this is also applicable with RTR's stators too.

Hmmm...now my question will be, why a 5A battery? For a 60/55, 2.5A is more than sufficient. But if you're looking beyond 60/55, then what's the purpose?

Regarding the melts, I think that's crap because, I used to have a 5A battery with stock wiring kit on my Rx & it hasn't melted. And wait a minute, there's another guy in this forum who has a Rx & 5A battery running successfully. No issues.

But how come your magneto is of 90W? I'm little confused. Its the charging coil that should have the capacity of 90W, if I'm not wrong.

IMO, get your existing coil rewound, even if it takes time.

Apart from all of the above, just double (possibly triple) check if your stock RR unit is sufficient to support 60/55 otherwise, you might need to change that as well.

you will not find any mechanic expert in automobile stator coil rewinding. you will have learn it yourself and then guide a rewinding mechnic. tell him how to do it.

        better to do coil rewinding

nothing will melt, dont worry. but a bigger battery needs more current for charging.

        my suggestion....

at standstill in neutral, run your bike at around 3500/4000 RPM, switch on the headlight and measure the current. now increase the RPM and take current readings at every 500 RPM increase. this way you will come to know at what current / RPM the bulb gives full light. now your aim is to get this current at 3500 RPM.

if the additional current you need is not more, you can simply rewind the lighting coil. otherwise you will need to rewind all the lilghting and charging coils and convert your bike to DC bu adding an APE RR unit.

Plz visit the two threads --

          Stator coil rewinding

          Thanks aargee and Prince

Actually I have done the scooter regulator stuff from a mechanic Shrikant Chavan in Pune.
He told me that though the magneto generates 90 Watts of power and 50 watts for light but the regulator and rectifier unit restricts 35 watts for headlight.
So he did one more thing. He disconnected my headlight only from stock regulator rectifier unit and connected this scooter regulator of 60 watts directly to my headlight ,hence now my stock regulator& rectifier unit which used to restrict light upto 35 watts is bypassed by this scooter regulator.
Now the light is more satisfactory but still at low rpm,the light becomes somewhat dim and fluctuates but now it gives good illumination at above 2000 rpm.
Well Shrikant has told me to test this light for few weeks. If not satisfied with this light,he will fit a different scooter regulator of more wattage maybe of a LML scooter.
At this moment,I have two regulators
one scooter regulator for headlight only
and the stock regulator rectifier unit for my other electrical syatem.
Hence at this moment the light is satisfactory so I will just try the high watt regulator after few weeks.

          @aargee
TVS stator coil generates 90 watts for kick start bikes and 105 watts for self start bikes. In my manual book of GLX,Magneto output is stated as 12V 90W
According to technical specification from Master Ignition LTD who are OEM suppliers of coil plates for TVS,50 watts out of 90 watts are reserved for light in and that too at 2300 rpm and above
Hence I think that a Caliber bulb of 40/45 watts can easily be put in Victor without any load on coil.

Oh God! same here dude. I am fed up of finding someone to rewind the coils. I just dont want to touch it by myself because i dont have that much time to sort it out if I mess it up. You got any one till yet? its been much time now ;P :P

              Dear Pankaj
I am from Kolkata. I had just planned something similar for my Honda Unicorn 160 and was googling for the Scooter Regulator - as the same is not available here.
              Now what I planned was - using a Bajaj Scooter 60W Regulator + 60/55W H4 from Bosch/Hella.

Can you pls provide some picture of the Regulator (so that I can explain at the spare shop, which regulator I want).
              thanks Shaswata
