  • Running-in confusion with Thunderbird!

    I have bought a RE Thunderbird TS two days back.
    I have just learnt how to ride a bike and still have those 'clutch-throttle' problems *sigh*.

    The manual prescribes speeds for running in the engine up to 500 km. But, if I take the bike to 2000 RPM (where it feels just right) the speeds are higher than the ones mentioned in the manual! If I drop down to those speeds, the bike feels under-revved!

    Is there a problem here?
    Also, since I am a novice, any tips I should follow during the run in would be highly appreciated.

    I am targeting 25 km per day to complete the run in in 20 days.

      dont simply go by the book. Make sure that the engine is not stressed, and you are not in a high gear at a low rpm. The engine should be running freely and smoothly. So even if that means a higher than prescribed speed, its alright.

      And increase the gap of gearshifts ( 20 to 2nd, 30-35 to 3rd, 40-50 to 4th and 60 to 5th ).

      Cruise till 60-65. Keep varying your speed.

      And i dont know about the current tbird, but my tbird took around 6000 kms to actually smoothen out!! but yes the first 1000 kms are the most critical.

        Even if you go by the mannual it suggests not to cross 70kms till 2k kms. Its not like other bikes it takes its own time to settle(smooth). Do not cross the 3k rpm till 2000kms. If you are planning for a trip do not keep the throttle constantly keep varying it. Use all the gears. Do not use the Electric start all the time use it only in signals(not all the signals ). Clean the bike properly Because you wont know where the chrome starts to Rust. Use choke if nessesary.Try to avoid giving your bike to others atleast till 1k kms.

          So you suggest not going by the manual? It suggests 1500 RPM, which I think is far too low!

          Had a bit of a problem today. Did around 20 kms.
          Encountered hell a lot of false neutrals, also, a couple of times on a downshift, the engine braking was um..... hard.
          Also, the engine was very very hot after I completed the ride! Almost burnt my fingers when I tried to touch it (yeah, I know, dumba** thing to do!).
          It even smelled a bit!

          What is the problem with the bike? Or is it just me???

          I have used four gears till now. I ride mostly in the third gear.

            ENgine heats prety quickly till the 2nd service. Regarding false neutrals you need to get used to it. Change the gears as needed not exactly @ 1.5k rpm.

                I've done some 350 kms on the bike, will complete 500 in a couple of days

                Here's the up: I ride it around 2000 RPM, alternating between 1800, 2000 and 2200 RPM. Should I make a higher throttle variation, or is this fine. I do change gears frequently enough, and that leads to RPM variation, even though for a short while.
                Any suggestions?

                Also, I'm washing the bike in the morning. I know that I'm to do it with shampoo, well, the painted parts anyway. I am going to protect the console, blinkers and exhaust from water. Anything else I should watch out for? How do I clean the engine (I'm thinking I should leave it to the service guys)
                About the shampoo cleaning. How exactly am I going to do it. I am thinking of mixing shampoo in water, then using a sponge soaked in it to clean the painted and chrome parts. Is it the right way?

                  You can use diesel fuel for cleaning the oily deposits on the underside and also on the engine cylinder fins. NOte: spray very sparingly or use a thin paint brush for this and wipe clean with a cotton cloth.

                  For painted and chromed parts do not use any strong detergents even if diluted with water during washing. It is better to use a carshampoo or just plain shampoo in a bucket full of warm water. It is better to avoid using a sponge as it can retain some of the sand and dirt and then cause scratch marks. THe best thing to do is use a old ves/baniyaan, and then let the vehicle dry thoroughly and then use a good quality car wax finally.

                  You can use any of the chrome polishes available for keeping the chrome parts clean. TO prevent rust you can use the car wax as well on the chrome parts during the monsoon time.

                    The bike has done 550 km, and it feels awesome after the first service!

                    The 'thump' is virtually non existent though, which is a minor let down. I would like to change the exhaust to the ones on the STD or Electra. Is that advisable? I don't want to lose out on the performance, engine longevity or even the FFE!

                      Change the exhaust to eitherto GoldenStar or Short Bottle. I would suggest not to change the exhaust till 3k kms.

                        Are these two the original RE exhausts?
                        What's the difference?

                        I won't change them till the 2nd service, there's no problem on that front.
                        Will it affect the performance though?

                          there is no problem if you take RPM higher than recommended occasionally, it will help it to open up even more freely.
