  • Caliber 115 Mileage problems

Hi guys, this is my first post one of my friends suggested me this site.

i have a 2003 green Caliber 115.. love the bike. I was earlier staying in Mangalore. Recently i came to blore from Pune - change of job..

i got my bike to blore. when i was in mlore it was returning a mileage of 65+ now suddenly it has dropped to 35-45 range.cannot understand what the problem is. i went to a mechanic in koramangala and got it serviced & tuned. still no improvement. My bike has done about 17k kms.

any suggestions as to what I should doing? any Hoodbabaa..! owners here

i havent changed the stock spark plug and the air filters yet.. so that is an option i guess?

Hi there.. Ex 2003 (Blue) Hoodibaba!! owner here..

From what I understand, Mangalore happens to be on the sea coast (i.e. low altitude) and Bangalore is set at a slightly higher altitude. The higher altitude at Bangalore will lead to rarification of air (= lower atmospheric pressure) as compared to Mangalore. This will cause less air to go inside your carb and will result in a much richer mixture i.e. lower fuel efficiency. You can confirm this by checking the colour of your spark plug and you will surely find it to be black in colour (which in effect means you are running too rich). The solution to this is to get the air fuel ratio adjusted by some experienced mechanic and make it leaner by just 1/2 a turn.

But this is only part of the explanation. Such minor changes in altitude will not cause such high changes in FE. The drop can be further explianed by the much higher + slower traffic in Bangalore as compared to Mangalore (I have been to both cities for a few hours only so cannot comment on that properly but its something I observed.) which will lead to stop-start type riding and effectively much lower FE.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Oh never knew all this.. will definitely get it checked by a experienced mechanic.. Thanks for the info

anything else that can be checked for during the service/check by the mechanic?

Love the Pulsar 220 too.. used to ride my bro's blue 220 in Pune.. just amazing even that returns more than what my Caliber does now

Also, how hard is it to install disc brakes on the front ? i have drum brakes now. Braking is not effective at all!

also , how much will it cost me?

I had the similar problem with my caliber a year back, i used to get average below 50kmpl. with persisted effort with the mechanic solved the problem, and told me that valves were jammed. I don't know what that means, but now i am getting around 65kmpl.
