  • Need help with Engine backfire

I have a 7 year old TVS Victor GL which has done 27000 kms till date. The bike has been the workhorse of my family ever since we bought it. My dad rides the bike only 15 days a month and it sits idle the next set of days owing to my dad's job profile. About 6 months back, the bike started misbehaving.

    List of problems faced :
    1. Engine backfiring.
    2. Loud 'PUT' 'PUT' sound from the engine coupled with bursts of fire from the silencer.
    3. Heavy black smoke.
    4. Refuses to idle.

We gave it to the A.S.S and they found the piston to be worn out. Charged 7000 bucks and change the piston head, rings and the bore.

The bike was fine for the next two months. Again these problems are showing their faces. All the above said problems are recurring.

What could be the problem? What can be done to rectify this?

There should be a warranty on the new cylinder isn't it? BTW, which A.S.S did you take it to? Ramkay?

But all your issues can also be related to air filter, carb cleaning & plug cleaning.

After the new cylinder has been changed, how many KMs did you guys observe the run in period & in two month of time, how many KMs did you guys clock?

Check if the valves have been leaking too much fuel-air mixture back into the intake or through the exhaust, i.e, if your valves have been damaged/worn out. If not check the timing or for a faulty spark plug. Get your silencer cleaned once besides, it might have built up carbon.

AFAI remember, there is no such things provided to me by Ramkay, Velachery. I still have the bill. Can I use it to claim Warranty?
I myself inspected the air filter and plugs. Both were fine and cleaned them both. The bike has done just above 5000 kms after the overhaul.

Will do it ASAP. But I am not at all convinced by the service provided by Ramkay. The silencer is filled with carbon deposits. Took the bike to Castrol bike zone today. Bookings closed till 28th. Confused of what to be done.

Checked the carb today. Removed the golden screw (AFR) and saw it to be covered with dust. So that should be how inside the carb too rite? How do I remove it and clean? Any specific procedure?

It must be the jet you're talking about. Just take it to a mechanic he'll clean it for you. Or you ca do it yourself. Just remove the bottom part of the carb by unscrewing the lower part. Don't forget to empty the carb filled with petrol in the float first! Then on you just have it remove 'the golden screw'(jet) with a basic tool. Clean it with petrol and put everything back.
              Cheers.

Start with replacing the spark plug. This happened in a friend's Fiero once. The spark plug was changed and everything went back to normal.

Even proper installation of spark plug will eliminate the trouble. Remove the plug and adjust the gap.
