  • Pulsar 180 ug3 emmitting smoke!!!

my 2007 pulsar 180 ug3 has been runnin smoothly since i bought it. more than 33K on the ODO. recently there's been a serious problem. whenever i'm revving hard above 7000rpm, light black smoke comes out of the exhaust. doesn't happen when i'm at a low rpm.
also, when i'm constantly running at above 115km/h for a considerable time or revving really hard like in racing & all, my engine stalls sometimes. i used to think that it might be due to the fuel going into reserve as on some ocassions it was fixed when i turned the knob to reserve. but now i have had the same prob with more than 4-5 litres of fuel in my tank.

i have changed the front chain sprocket from 15 teeth to 14 teeth for better low rpm torque n mileage.
yet to change clutch plates. changed the last one at 18K kms.
local mechanics say might be a prob with the pistons n cylinder heads.
they are advising to re-bore or change the piston cylinder kit.

    please advise!!!
    M very confused!!!

If you get Blue smoke then piston& bore may be suspect...Black smoke indicates Rich AFR at WOT.Check and clean your air filter, and then see if it still exists...if so go to your SVC and get it tuned.

Your issue is basically because of following reasons:

        1. Common leaded fuel... check if your bunk is taking you for a ride ?
        2. Filter is choking your intake. Ask your mechanic to check if its up for replacement.
        3. Since you say that its visible only after 7000 rpm, which by normal riding standards is little over the city riding condition limit, I m postulating incomplete combustion and fuel injection problem .. both can be rectified by cleaning out with detergent fuel additives.
Safe riding prolongs life (bike & rider & public)

            2. will get my filter checked
            3. incomplete combustion. hmmm... could be cos of the spark plugs. and fuel injection - should i get my carb checked?
            4. detergent fuel additives? dont know much about them. could u pls elaborate?
            1. and wat could leaded fuel do?
anyways .. thanks for the reply and tell me some more if u know about wat i asked now.

                Guys,

My P180 UG3 has been emitting white smoke recently. There is nothing when the engine is revving but during cool down, there is a burning smell and white smoke near the engine and gear box sides.

Even my pillion riders have started feeling it.

I thought the problem was bad fuel and I filled Shell Super Unleaded. The engine felt a bit smoother. The smoke reduced but was still there.

I also feel that the engine performance has gone down. It does not feel torquey as before. I have loved the 180's torque.

I took it to one Bajaj A.S.S who said "Sir, everything is fine. The bike is good. You could have washed with Water which is evaporating right now".

                What the ????

I have a trusted local mechanic who said it could be a piston problem but he asked me observe for a few more days. He said the bore piston assembly might need replacement and I might have to do another run-in.

It's hard to ride this bike sedately. Come on!

My bike is 4 years old and I have completed about 25k kms. I agree that I do some spirited riding but I still feel is it not too early for piston rings to get worn out ?

Can some one please guide me the next steps. If Engine overhaul is the only option, I am ok but I need pointers of some one qualified and knows what he's doing (in Chennai).

Also, what will be approximate cost and can I get back the performance.

I am personally an extremely dis satisfied customer of Bajaj ASS and I have a local mechanic who can do small fixes for me but I'm a little apprehensive about giving this job to him.

                Help appreciate PLEASE.
