  • Cant Idle right?!?! 150dtsi

Its a 6 year old pulsar done 63K kms and 2 engine rebuilds. Last top end rebuild was 10k kms back...

Stage1 porting, clutch mod and upjetted (running this setup from past three years)

Throttle response is disappointing, she does not idle at low revs. Also, when i turn the idle screw to get the revs up she does not respond appropriately...i.e engine rpm does not go up for a while even if the screw does

    Where is the issue..

    1 Bent valves
    2 Carb diaphragm

I dont see any other reason...seniors please help

    p.s.: its 'idle', not ideal

try replacing carb diaphram assembly (black color) , change the whole assembly that moves in and out, since there can be scouring on the walls, which prevent free movement.

although it can be some other issue also.

It also stalls when cold...there is negative pulse in the carb (similar to a vaccum lock) and the engine stops.

I'll try to help as much as I can on basic troubleshooting front, but try taking an second opinion - ALWAYS!!!

                1. Are you using a stock carb? If not pls provide the type of carb that you're using
                2. What's the stock MJ & PJ for Pulsar & after upjetting what's the MJ & PJ sizes?
                3. Is it a stock air filter or after market air filters? And what make?
Last but not the least, have you cleaned or replaced the air filter anytime recently & tried playing with carbs?

                  Yes! its a stock carb

I guess its 117.5 and 17 now...dont know the stock sizes for 150

                  3. Is it a stock air filter or after market air filters? And what make?

Its a stock air filter cleaned and oiled a month back

Last but not the least, have you cleaned or replaced the air filter anytime recently & tried playing with carbs?

I've cleaned the filter and the carb last week...air filter is 5k kms old. No fiddling around with carb...just upjetting done 3 years back

Update : She started overflowing, changed the float pin to genuine one. After which she does idle better but throttle response is still not crisp.

She is fast enough to kill any 150 in its class in acceleration...top speed is restricted to 113 kmph (true not speedo)

I have made tappets lose enough to be noisy...rode her like that for good 350 kms. This helps close tiny valve leaks as the valves completely close and make their place on the seat after constant ramming.

Thanks for your response aargee...let me know if there is more i can do

So from your post, what I understand is, you upjet it but didn't add a AM filter, which is not quite the standards I suppose.

                      Some details pls?

Ok, but I suppose you've your own justification to do so. But from what I've heared, the tappets must be adjusted for the best fit, neither too loose or too tight & I suppose you've a oil leak at the cylinder head. Correct me if I've misunderstood.

O.k...its not the standard but for a lean pulsar its a requirnment if you want to ride a fun bike plus i had a port polishing done before i shaved the head by 0.25mm to bump compression, it did have a K&N setup but it was just pathetic so dumped the AM filter n went stock

The tappets are to be adjusted RIGHT! but the idea here was to stop minute leaks between the valve and the seat. When you ride with really loose tappets the valves close completely and when they ram on the valve seat end up with a near perfect seal. This is not advisable with valves which are burnt or bent as its futile

She idles better but than before but have to keep the rpm to 1200..i need her to ideal at 1000rpm

Throttle response is not crisp...the rpm climb is not as it should be when the butterfly opens...there is a lag which i am really pissed off with. I guess need to replace the diaphragm

The lag may be caused by improper jet size. This happened with me. I had K&N installed and upjetted. But when I moved back to stock filter without swapping the jet there was a lag

Setup is three year old...lag creeped in 400 kms back

Oh damn! Then you need to get the carb checked.
