  • Chain Tensioner

I went to the Hero Honda Service station today for regular service for my Jan 2006 Karizma. The mechanic revved the engine at neutral and told me that my chain tensioner has worn out.

I was curious, without engaging the any gear, how was he able to identify that the chain tensioner is gone.... Is he just banking on experience or did he really see that anything was wrong. Somehow my trust level on the service centre mechanics is down.

Can anyone tell me how can I detect by myself, if the chaintensioner has worn out??

Get the bike checked from a competent mechanic, the HH mechanic might be/might not be correct. One doesnt need to engage the gear to check the chain tensioner condition.

yes it is possible to judge by the sound. He is referring the timing chain tensioner in the engine, not the final drive chain.

Chain tensioner replacement depends upon the age of the bike and riding style. Try this simple test for check

Go to some bridge or Hillie area.
Try upper gear say 4th and try to rev the engine.
Check if any tak tak sound from the engine or not.

You need to check it with a good mechanic though, because this tak tak sound may also came from the tappet. Else try adjusting the tension screw in the side way of the engine.
