  • Wheel wobble issue with p220

Let me give you a brief intro about my ride - pulsar 220 dtsi , bought on aug20th 2009 so she is 1 and a half years old. Completed 15k kms, running on stock mrf tyres.

I had a minor crash about 6 months back which resulted in the front disc getting bent. Repairs were all under insurance claim.
But ever since , there is a slight front wheel wobble if i let go of the steering after 60 kmph. Ive tried it on all kinds of roads and the problem persists .. Till now i had ignored this because it has never affected the actual handling of the bike even at high speeds.

But off late , even i i dont let go of the handle , there is a slight wobble at 100+ kmph .. I go for quite a few short rides out of the city and the last trip i went to was somewhere near kanakapura. I had a pillion who weighs close to 100kgs. This time the wheel wobble was significant.

So in short the symptoms are :
    1) initially no wobble if i held on to the handle
    2) slight wobble now at high speeds
    3) significant wobble if there is a pillion

Cone set is in proper shape , tires are filled with nitrogen and always at recommended pressure.

I was suspecting that the impact that bent the front disc may have bent the forks slightly or even the rim. Why i say slightly is because at speeds below 60 kmph , there is no sign of any wobble with or without pillion !
The bike has always felt rock solid and planted at 100+ speeds but im afraid its not so now. I badly need to zero in on the problem and get it fixed. Any ideas ??

Check the T stem, if it is aligned properly with the handle or not. Check the rim for any bends and also check the front tire.

For me it was the front tire.

I suspect the culprit to be with the alloy wheels. Get them checked (if not repaired) at a wheel truing shop. Ensure that the place you visit is experienced with repairing alloy wheels.

when you say tire , what exactly do you mean ? what tire related issue can cause a wheel wobble ?

I also strongly suspect a rim problem. if it was a fork bend then the wheel will drag to just one side. But in my case , it wobbles. So its either rim bend or improper wheel balancing. The problem is , there are quite a few computerized/fancy places to get car rim problems addressed but none of those chaps do two wheeler stuff.

PS: the link youve given is pretty nice but its primarily to do with wheels with spokes. The wheel in question here is the front alloy of p220 thanks though ..

I guess ill need to look really hard to find a proper place where they fix 2 wheeler rims.
Anyone in Bangalore have any idea about such a place ???

If your tire is worn out beyond a certin point it will cause the front wheel to wobble. 220 uses soft compound tires. It wears out in roughly a year. It will not look like its worn out but it will not have much grip.

Before doing anything else just check the T stem alignment as that is the most common cause of steering wobble after a crash.

if the fork is bend, tyre will drag to one side and will worn out in an asymetrical way i.e. will get worn out only on one side from center.

rim may be damaged, but if it is damaged, better to replace it....

tyre can be the culprit....soft compound tyres wears off in a different fashion, which causes wheel wobble after significat wear..

check out this cool link, it gives a lot of information about motorcycle tyre tread wear patterns.....

its probably not the tire guys .. Its in pretty decent shape .. im sure they can happily manage another 5k kms ..
So looks like ill attend to these things :
                  1) t stem alignment
                  2) rim bend
                  3) tires ( just to be sure )

Thanks a lot for the quick and helpful inputs
