  • higher wattage headlamps

Well , i own a pulsar 220 and yes i am aware that the headlights setup is the best stock setup that one can possibly have in this country. But some of us who have owned 220 for a while will tell you that the single 55w high beam on the highway is no match for cars with 2 55w headlights !
I dont want to spend too much by installing a hid setup. So my question is -

1)Can i use a higher wattage bulb -say- 80watts for my highbeam and change my pilot lamps and rear number plate illumination lamps to leds to compensate for the additional load on the battery ?

2)can my 220 fairing/electrical wiring/headlamp case take the additional heat produced by the higher wattage lamp ?

I know that using high wattage bulbs tend to damage the reflector and the headlamp case over time , but philips and a few reputed companies claim that their 80w and 100w bulbs are "anti uv coated" and hence safe to use with clear lens headlamp covers.

Please shed some "light" on this because i need a more powerful high beam within 2 weeks ..

Ashwin, try the 60/55 Philips extreme & you will find it convincing. Otherwise, Osram's nightbreaker or something, not sure which one, you can find more info on this Osram discussed in N250R ownership thread.

P220's BCU won't allow any more power drain at headlight. you need to keep the power below 60W.
Find better 55W H7 bulbs, they will cost you more than 800/-

Philips xtremeand Osram Night breaker bulbs are available in H7 55W.
buy a pair and replace both bulbs in P220.

@ Motionfreak - I also wanted to install higher wattage bulbs for my ZMA. The stock ones suck. I have installed a 9AH battery. Also what all other accessories would be required, i mean ballast or anything else for the bulbs.

            I think thats the best..
@Motionfreak: bro, i own a pulsar 180 UG IV.. all stock.. and same as above, i too am looking for an upgrade in lighting without any costly modifications.. can u please suggest me a bulb that suits my bike and gives better light? I dont mind if its white also..

(With some understanding, i know i cant go for the H7 as i need high and low beam both.. so i have to ho for H4.. i think.. but i dont know what wattage can my p180 handle.. So name of the bulb n specifications with company name welcomed.. )

              for zma it's very easy
              two options
              1) HID. it will cost you more than 2.5K/- + projector and labour

              2) 60/55w or 100w filament bulb + good relay
in my zma I had Philips Rally 100W H4 bulb. it's the cheapest 100w bulb some Rs. 125-150/- and bosch five point relay for each filament ( ie high and low). you can use other one for keeping low beam alive. Also I use same relay for horn too.
              total including labour <500/-
any good mechanic with enough knowledge about relays can do this.
I suggest try 60/55 w bulb first coz ,IMHO, 100w bulb heats up a bit more than the glass can sustain in long run.
Osram nightbreaker 60/55w H4 is currently the best, but it costs too much.

in addition you can go for ceramic H4 bulb socket.

does your headlight take current from battery?
if not then by adding avenger 180's coil you can put 60/55 bulb.
but instead I'd suggest coil rewinding and APE RR.
search the forum for more info.

The UG4 supports 55/60W H4 easily without mods.

                        Are you sure bro?
and what company n model would be best?

@motionfreak: I guess the light works on the coil instead of battery as it dims and brightens with the accelerator.. but i have no problem with my battery and its working fine.. and my pulsar is a 180.. so will the coil be same as avenger 180 or pulsar 150??

install cheap 55/60 W H4 bulb. if you are happy with the result, after 2K rpm, then keep it or go for osramNB.
if not then coil rewinding, Ape RR is what I'll suggest. This will cost you more than avy coil but your headlight will be powered by battery, so later you can install HID too.

BTW are meeting on Sunday at Lonawala?
