  • Rear Disc Brakes and Mono Shock for Enfield Thunderbird

    Hi Guys,
    I need suggestions.

1.) Planning to fix Rear Disc Brakes in my Enfield Thunderbird. It this a good idea, if yes i am from Bangalore need to know where do i find these brakes and the kit, the Enfield Showroom onces are expensive what i heard. What will be the approx price and brakes and the kit and where in Bangalore i will get it.

2.) It is a good idea to fix Mono Shock aborbers in my Thunderbird, the bike lenght will increase but the comfort will be great thats what i have been told by my Enfield Mechanic. And if yes what kind of Mono Shock can be used, what will be the price and where will i get it. If any branded are available.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Rgds,
    Amit

        - not really needed if your bike has a front disc. The rear does a more than adequate job of stopping, if the hub is clean, and the brake shoes are scrubbed properly.

        - The part highlighted in bold is the issue. And also how to align the mechanism properly, and making a strong enough mount on the frame and swingarm.

Thanks a lot guys, so the conclusion is there is no need for any of the two and as Mono Shock is ruled as it will screw up the basic hardware. The Rear Disc brakes will be a waste of money.

            Thanks for all the comments

Amit, penning down my little knowledge...

First, none of the RE service centers will have rear disc brakes. Moving on to find a disc brake that is closest match, first let us try out with any Indian motorcycle that has 18 inch wheel. Basically none except the old Rx, CD100, Splendor & all of them only have drum brakes.

This means, you need to import a rear brake disk kit OR do an Indian juggad. Buy the caliper kit, disc, hose, master cylinder of any 18" front wheel & then custom make the mount point for that caliper kit in the swing arm of RE & then buy the 18" hub, mount the HUGE front disc to rear!!! whew!!! Is this worth the trouble? Or do you want to simply import & assure you, we don't know what are the other troubles awaiting.

Probably if you hand it over to a mechanic & relax, he'll milk your cash for sure!!!

Last but not the least, pls learn how to brake effectively, it will help you very much in long run, even if you upgrade your ride to a liter class as well as save lots of $$$

Basically, engineers design to get the entire weight within a triangle described by the front+rear mounts and a point above the tank centered between the axles for the center of gravity & the mono suspension is designed to do all the job within that triangle.

Now tell me, do you've this kind of calculation on your TB or you simply want to kill the engineering for aesthetic looks?
